Long Post Warning

Here is the scenario. I am playing patched VI in the Viking campaign as the Scots. I control all of Scotland, Pictland and three Eastern provinces in Ireland. I am at war with the Irish who have the two western provinces on Ireland. I am allied to the Vikings (only in their home provinces but with lots of ships) and the Saxons(still have most of original provinces most of Mercia which is no eliminated). I am neutral with the Picts who are isolated on an island without a port. I am also neutral with Northumberland and the Welsh and share a border with each.

I do not share a border with the Saxons, Picts or Vikings. I do have ships in every lane except one, and the Irish have one ship. This is where things get strange. I attack the Irish ship and get the defeat message. My ships sank 1, Enemy ships sank, 0. So I look at the sea lane and the Irish ship is gone. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif I look at the adjacent lanes and still can't find it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif I hit the v key and all sea lanes are green. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif

Great, I have a victory. Maybe I misread the message.?

So I simultaneously attack the last two Irish provinces. They abandon one and fight in the other. When they battle screen comes up, they are not being lead by their King, but just a normal general. The battle starts and I can't find their general. Maybe he withdrew immediately. Anyway I win the battle. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif Ransom is refused and prisoners, including the king, are executed. How did I capture the king? Why didn't he retreat to the fort?

Now I get the message that the Saxon king died in battle and an heir has taken over the throne. Must be a battle with the Northumbrians which they are at war with. I click ok, and there is no message about the Irish king being killed, or the faction being eliminated. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

The small garrison in that retreated to the fort goes rebel. The Irish are no longer on the ally screen and I am at war with the saxons http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-speechless.gif WTF

I had no land or sea battles with the Saxons and do not share a border with them. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif Why are we at war?

The next year they attack my ships and lose 3 of 4 battles and I finish off their fleet the next year, and they split into civil war. That is the situation as it stands.

Again I do not share a border with them but am thinking of bribing some rebels and then reinforce those provinces with my large army's from Ireland, and move on to attack them from there. It would take too long to try to get all my ships out of the south in order to get the auto cease fire and I don't want to lose trade with Welsh provinces that also are down their.

I really don understand what happened in the last few years and have never seen anything like this before. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif

Oh well, I guess it give me a good excuse to fight them, but if I do, it will divide my kingdom to the north and south, leaving the Welsh and Northumbrians in the middle. That makes for a lot of borders to defend.

note: These are all guesses

Irish king dies before the battle, or runs and is captured.

Saxons attacked either your ship or the Irish ship, and there was a three way sea battle. (most probable)

Saxons may have married an Irish princess and get ceded lands. You hit the Irish/Saxon army. (unlikely, the army should have the Saxon colors and you would notice that)

Thanks,
I hadn't considered a three way sea battle but that is probably what happened. I defeated the Irish, but lost to the saxons.

There were definatly no Saxons involved in the land battle. It was just Irish against Scots. The Irish king was in the provence that was abandoned, and would have been auto-captured when the new provence was lost. I still don't know why the enemy general never showed up on the battlefied. He was in a calverly unit, and I never saw any calvery on the field before the battle ended. I guess he withdrew as soon as it started.
