View Full Version : Need some help in finding insignia
Greetings all http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I am looking for unit/army insignia throughout history. I am not looking at any specific period, or necessarily any specific country. I would just like to see some unit/army insignia/standards from before the 20th century. Any links or images to any countries military insignia specific to units, orders, or armies would be most welcome.
I am working with some friends on a website and we wanted to have some kind of logo. This is to help me get some ideas and inspiration for developing our own logo.
Any help would be most appreciated.

As a kid I LOVED looking at these in the Encyclopedia Brittanica. I remember there being so many illustrations--different time periods, different nations, different divisions of military organizations. Many were recent to modern, but I do remember there being some from the past as well.
I'll do a quick search to see if maybe they shown them online like they used to in my grandfather's big leatherbound books.

Well, Encyclopedia Brittanica online didn't yield anything useful.
Here is a link to a site with extensive pictures of insignia from all over the world. Most are current and 20th century, but some were from the 19th century. The nice thing about this site is that it's well-organized and detailed--and there are a LOT of insignias.

I'm enjoying this, so I'll see if I can find anything better (older).

Here's a link to a site that focuses on medals from around the world. Some very nice pictures, and a very large collection of images.

Um ... I can't read the site itself, but the link description to this site said:
European heraldry
An historical presentation of the world of the coats of arms through present ans old european monarchies. Possibility of create your own coat of arms.

It was the part about creating your own coat of arms that caught my attention, given what you said you were up to. Perhaps this is something that might be useful (and then again, perhaps not).
Thank you very much for your help
WOW Those are all very good sites. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ht_bow.gif
I can speak French so the French one is very understandable. Very interesting designs in there. In fact the French site has some VERY good designs.
Do you know any sites with a listing of Japanese Mon O'Jonin San ?
If anyone else knows any other sites or books, anything that could help design a logo, please do post. I can assimilate a lot of information http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Thanks again everyone.
Very much appreciate your help.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif You're quite welcome Sinan-san. My pleasure.
Here is a link to an awesome site for Japanese flags, including many hata from Japan's feudal period:

I also found a site that depicted most of the well-known mons, but apparently I took screenshots of the them all and neglected to save the site URL as a favorite http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif . I'll see if I can relocate it and then post a link later. If I can't find it, I could send you the image files via e-mail if you'd like.
Incidentally, if you back up on the URL of the site for Japanese flags, you can find similar pages for the flags of many different countries around the world. That site is one of the best ones for flags I've ever found.
