Hi there,

This is my first post in the Entrance Hall. I've been confused by something for awhile now but I keep forgetting to ask, and well, today is your lucky day because I actually remembered

Playing VI with the patch. When I go into a battle, and get to the pre-battle screen where you can organize your reinforcements, sometimes the system of command seems a little messed up. As I understand it, regardless of command stars, your king is supposed to command on the field of battle, always, without exception. But sometimes something different happens.

Say I have a king with 2 stars and another general with 5 stars, both in the starting lineup. I get to the pre-battle screen. At first, the king's portrait appears as the commanding general. I hit the down arrow to display my reinforcements. The portrait gets covered by my starting lineup. I fiddle around with my reinforcements. I hit the up arrow and the 2nd screen of reinforcements disappeared, and the portrait reappears.... only it's not a portrait of my king, but of the 5 star general. Now he's commanding and my king is some undistinguished unit of royal knights, only recognizable by the fact that he has 21 men in his unit. If I'm fighting a battle with lots of royal knights, with similar valor and armor upgrades, there is virtually no way to tell who the king is once they start to take losses.

I have figured out that the king will take over as long as you move the 5-star general out of the starting pool and into the reinforcement pool... but sometimes for obvious reasons I want my best men out front.

This may have been discussed before, but does anyone have any thoughts on this? I don't suppose there's some way to fix this...

Well anyway just some food for thought, and maybe this will help someone who doesn't know how to keep their king in command -- just banish that high-ranking general to the reinforcement pool

Greetings, CountMRVHS. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I've only had this happen to me once. i rarely use the king in battles after the opening moves. Still, wanted to say hello.

Yeah, it doesn't happen very often to me, either. Hasn't happened in quite some time, actually... but I just thought I'd bring it up as something that I'd seen.

Thanks for the reply Doug-Thompson

Never had it happen to me. Did you take your King’s unit out of the main battle and add it to the reinforcements?

Thanks Satyr Looks like I've got some catching up to do as well http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

@Lord Godfrey - well, like I said it's been awhile but I'm quite sure I didn't touch the king... I left him right where he was, in the starting lineup if I remember correctly. I always want to see that big square general flag topped with a golden crown, so I'm sure I left the king where he was. But like I said, when I start off in the prebattle screen, the King is always the general, until I start organizing the reinforcements. It's like, as soon as the reinforcement panel comes up and covers the general's portrait, the game forgets that the king is supposed to always rule on the battlefield and reverts back to the higher star rule.

Of course, sometimes having the higher-ranked general would make more sense.... but it's just not honorable, dammit

If you are really getting stomped then the king is the one that takes forever to die. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Possibly grouping all the other units of royal knights and leaving his separate may help you distinguish between them.

Theres a little catch to that. Both your king and general get a win for that. That is if you put your king in as a reinforcement

Use the F1 function key, it gives you stats on the units in the order they appear below, including commander name. It's cumbersome but works.

Goodpoint, WorkNeglecter, I almost never use the F1 key in battles. Might be hard to remember in the heat of battle, though...
