I've been reading a few of these guides and I'm wondering just how hard it is to mod MTW? I've never modded any other games before so is it very hard for beginners? Do you need special programs?
I have an idea for a mod that's unrealistic but should be fun for fans of a certain series (that's all I say).

1. Well basicly it all depends on your skills. Everyone can play with simple .txt files, not everyone can make unit graphics like Duke John or flip tho. Modding is when you just add some more tradable goods for lets say Wessex, and when you create thing like HTW or something of its rank.
2. You should check the Org's upload section, you'll find there the programs you need. I use mainly:
- GnomeEditor
- readBIF
- notepad
- PaintShopPro 7.0
- UltimatePaint
3. Everything starts from an idea. Though it may seem unrealistic at the first glance, you may find a way to adapt it to MTW limitations.

A good mod to start with is adding a new unit to the game, something simple, essentially a copy of an unit with a different name. Medieval Total War is not the easiest game to work with, and this will let you get into understanding vaguely how the game works.
