Another thing I've noticed from Timecommanders is that the game engine very abruptly switches between animations which really inhibits the suspension of disbelief for me.

The better FPSes (& more or less all other advanced animation) use animation blending to smoothly transition between animations, giving a marked visual improvement.

Does anyone know if CA is planning on doing that/ can a CA person give some indication?

I certainly hope that when you play the game you dont zoom into a group of 50 soldiers duking it out instead of watching the other 9950... I would rather they have the ballance ect perfected than the graphics.

In any case, they are using, to my understanding, a very old version of the engine...

Well I cant imagine how Im supposed to find time zooming in on that many combats while controlling 20 units in a chaotic 4v4 MP battle. Detailed graphics/animations are eye candy afterall..

But yes , Time Commanders used an old build of the engine so we can expect/hope there are changes..

Well I often find time to look fairly closely in S & M...

Anyways, there's always replays :)

How many of those advanced FPSs are able to have thousands of soldiers displayed at the same time?

I think it would mean an unneccessary extra burden for the developers and also my system. And IMO it already looks great.

I don't think animation blending is a particularly big burden at all.
Rome looks pretty magnificent in stills & you can bet your ass I'll be buying it as soon as I am able.

But I'm just saying that it looks pretty crappy when the soldiers jerk between different animations http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

Aye, the animation of units has improved greatly since the first videos we saw months and months ago. Watch an older video, and then watch a new one. Trust me, you will see the difference.
