Hi, I was always led to believe that your king's influence decided what command rating your prince would be when he grows up, but I have been loading this one saved game like a million times and to my surprise a not so great 3 star prince was reborn as a 5 star general, a 1star general and a couple in between... however the vicesa and virtues he is born with seem to be the same no matter how many times I re-birth him...
yep, they change a bit. they should be around the same though and fluctuate onyl within +-1* assuming your king is very influential or the opposite.

actually, I think they fluctuate to within +/- 2 stars, but V&V usually take a big bite out of the star ratings (like pride and secret pride).
I have a strong belief that the stars rating of your heir is directly related to your kings stars because I never had low star king pump out a high star king. But I have had plenty of high star kings pump out high star princes.
Now whats that vice where a general is having an affair with a nobles wife. Why doesnt that 9 star general have the guts to tag my queens wife its always has to be with some other general's wife but not mine.
Hey honey I'm going to be out on a campaign but this 9 star general will be here for the time being and I WILL NOT BE BACK FOR ANOTHER MONTH FOR SURE. Please make sure this general feels very at home and appease any discomforts he has
With high influence rulers the command will sway within 2 stars as son of spam has said. That is without vices - also said by son of spam. It tends to either remain the same or increase slightly with 9 influence rulers. The same principles can be applied to piety, dread and acumen.

Every time I play I play as Poland... Which has been 3 campaigns. The first 2 times I kept gettting really bad princes, but this third time i had like 2 5 stars 2 4 stars, a 2star and a 3 star. I am soo sure now that it is randomized cause this was in the begining of the campaign and were like the first princes to be born, and I had done nothing differently(i always go for volhevnia & pomerania first) One constant is that I always get guys that are fat, lazy, and prideful which sucks....
I heard someone say that almohads get good princes... is that true? I think it is kinda unfair that 1 faction gets better generals than others... Every game I have played the spanish run around with these huge generals with well over 5 stars, so i am starting to wonder....

Some factions just have better heirs. The Almohad Khalifah starts w/ about five or six stars on early, so his kids only vary +/- 2 stars from that (giving you the possibility of an 8 star general @ the beginning of the game) The Spanish and Byzantines are both like this as well quite often.
The Danes, Polish, Hungarians, etc. do not really have super-generals as Kings, so their sons tend to follow those lines for a couple generations. Just one more thing that makes those factions hard
byz have the best princes followed closely by the spanish, english, and the almos.
the key is to cook up the nice princes.
max out ruler's influence through winning battles, or jihads/crusades.
then prune the royal line by only having the +2 princes get the crown, sending whoever is ahead in the line on suicide missions against rebels or something.
funny how with jedi generals, it can actually win some territories for you if you fight it yourself.

So what does that mean? You don't heirs below 2 or above 2? I don't ever send anyone or suicide missions. Every life is to precious for me... I usually want my low command princes to get the crown so that a 5 star general isn't wasted, as a king he would only live like 70 years and 15 of those he is immature and unusable.
I think Katank means the princes with +2 command over their father.
"Waste" is a relative term, under the circumstances. Look at it this way. Let's say you start off with a 4-star King. He's going to have kids from 2-6 stars. Now, if your first son is a 2-star, and your second is a 6-star, you may think "Hey, let's have the 2-star become King, and use the 6-star as a general". Which is not a bad idea. However, when your 2-star becomes King, he's only going to have sons with 0-4 stars.
Now, let's say you 'suicide' the first son, and let the second son become King. His sons are going to have 4-8 stars. Now, if you manage to get an 8-star son, and make him King, his sons will have 6-9 stars. So if that King has a fair number of sons, they are all going to be good generals.
So the point is, you can take your one good general immediately, or you can build towards having a lot of good generals.

Do they still have the reset problem, where if your king has 9 stars, his son will sometimes have 0?
they do.
that's why I sometimes need to selectively prune the high star ones I can't let a 8* or 9* take the throne since their kids would likely be horrible.
I try to get the crown prince to be a 6* or 7* as they tend to produce the best heirs.
when I do this routinely, I can get 7* or 8* from any faction within a few decades.
besides, their lives aren't really wasted. their BGs are uber strong and if fighting the battle yourself, can easily take out 100+ man, sometimes routing whole enemy army by themselves.
I use them on rebels to soften them up for subsequent invasions where my regulars would have an easier time. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
