Well I decided to play as the French finally, and I have 1 big problem. I love killing the Frenchies so much that I keep on sending them into unwinnable battles. Now my French territories are surrounded by a bunch of 9 star generals. The A.I has become so aggressive I am now losing territory and this means I cant train as many frenchies for the slaughter and soon there willl be no more frenchies to be killed. This is one loss I will much appreciate and who would'nt besides you know those French guys.

OH NOS NO MORE FRENCHIES TO KILL

oh well, you can still hope for pathetic loyalist rebellions so that the AI can enjoy killing them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You better get on the phone and call the New World. They're pretty much the only thing that can come over the pond and save you now.

multiple invasions by the Turks, Italians, Russians and Egyptians, all of them with 3+ stack armies, my King gets wiped off the face of the earth and i have no adult heirs to the kingdom. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

that`s the last time i`ll position myself at the crossroads like that, talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

Hmmm, the Hungarians have a hard time cutting borders anywhere except Constantinople. It is more of a struggle but fun. I oftens see the Hungarian AI get huge, sometimes they run all over the horde

Come on – we all know the French are just a bunch of cheese eating surrender monkeys. Consider yourself a role-playing King. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-clown.gif

@mablung, the huns can establish a border at pomerania, poland, hungary, croatia in the west and conquer everything east of that with having const. and georgia.

later, push to have egypt as a border

I usually establish a "border" at the Atlantic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

yeah, the edges of the map.

real easy despite huge number of borders since there are no rival factions

Katank, I didn't want to get excommed - I play that style to prevent me running over the AI. I also didn't have the troops as they were already guarding the western border against HRE and the Italians. The Mongols had taken everything east of Moldavia and I was hard put to restrain them.

I just heard on the BBC that the French today are celebrating (sp?) the anniversary of their massive defeat at Dien Bien Fu (sp?) in Viet Nam.

Only the French would have a holiday to commemorate their greatest military defeats.

I recently read an article in the supreme liberal german newspaper "Die Zeit", a better paper than every single English, Italian, Spanish newspaper I have ever read...

There was one of this huge historic articles about the war Dien Bien and i seems that the frech troops were made up by small numbers of paratroopers with the rest consisting of the foreign legion, made up to 80-90% by german soldiers http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Seems the french put quite a staunch resistence against far superior numbers taking many of them with them with an relation of the franch an enemy losses mounting around 1:8.. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif

that's the questionable issue.

what do you call a victory? taking the field at the end of day or favorable kill ratios?

even though the french killed more, the vietnamese troops are far cheaper to train and replace.

The question is wich army would you want to be in. For me I'd prefer to be with the losers in that case

that's true.

I was thinking more as the nation/faction leader POV.

differs by your geopolitical situation etc. I suppose

well to a real national leader i think that a victory is captureing the field, i mean today what leader would say " yup we may have been kicked outta that country but hey they took twice as many losses" i dont think a political leader who did that would last another term in office do you? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Mablung

Vexilles, that brings up the other side of the issue. Would the public stand to have a leader for another term if from this war they suffered horrendous casualties? The answer is whether they are attacking or defending. When defending the answer is winning the field, when attacking it is on casualties and winning the field. The public will view a win with numerous casualties when defending land as patriotic, unless they shouldn't have been there in the first place (one could argue Iraq).

well, if you can inflict enough casualties to make it a pyrrhic victory for the other side, taking it back is far easier.

besides, civil wars never broke out when I inflicted heavy losses upon the enemy and withdrew. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Actually, in New Sealand they also celebrate a lost battle.
