It was on a cloudy german day not long ago when i sat in front of my screen just one more time, feeling the strong urge to lead large and powerful armies into vicious battles; An army full of battle-hardened men devoted to me, obeying every single one of my commands without questioning them ( Damn! Sometimes they better should question them!)
On that day i had already stilled my blood-lust by utterly destroying many more or less good opponents, some of my "new" tactics had worked extremely well, i was in an excellent mood and in high spirits ( "high" describes my state of mind exactly http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif )! Suddenly a man entered the forum, a man well-known and much feared in this community: AMPmortog entered the scene on that cloudy german day in spring 2002...
Now, that was the challenge i looked for after i had such a victorious day so far!
Getting a little nervous and tense i hastily opened a game on Ironing and was just typing my challenge when AMP on his own stepped into my game...
What now? Which tactic should i use against this Titan of Shoggy-online? I had fought many battles against AMP so far, statistically winning only two out of five or even six games, which means i lost three or four! Hehe only a very few players can claim to win against me that often on a somewhat regular basis...( Uuuuh i am soooooo arrogant again hehe). What tactic could be sufficient against AMP?
I decided to try the risky but immensly funny and inspiring "Naginata-surprise".
That tactic involves a sudden Naginata (Epaminondas-style) charge, which comes not frontal but from one side. The heavy, slow Naginata are backed up by Nodachi and the often underestimated Ninjas, a very strong assault on the enemy-line while my low-honour guns occupy my center and fire volley on volley into the enemy-center, getting also hit hardly, but who cares? My cav on the wing moves fast to flank on the same side as the Naginatas advance, trying to fall into the enemies rear. You know what? This little trap works fine often, i have beaten with that tactic many a good player and as it turned out, i also trapped the great AMP! Wow! AMP got disorganized and was in full rout only minutes after the game started! Excellent! i thought, i am unbeatable! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
AMP asked for a rematch and i granted it, feeling secure in the knowlegde that now i would create another surprise for him....
In the second battle i chose a much faster army with more Nodachi ( against enemy-speers) and no Naginata nor Ninjas. I planned to flank him again, this time on the other side and more carefully executed, which means to try to make the opponent believe that you are up for a gun-shootout, while suddenly you move quick!
But i fought not against some dull semi-newbie chiefthain, but against the great warrior AMP!
He realized what i was doing soon and responded to my little plan like a true champion: He retreated his flank in danger while advancing his troops on the other flank. This time i got heavily disorganized and right in that crucial moment when i tried to regroup my too wide-spread army, AMP attacked with full might! My poor men were sent home the hard way, some of them might still be running like hell, noone knows where to....
Damn! I lost that battle! Another one! Let me see how AMP can cope with my most beloved tactic: The 12+4! 12 Cav plus 4 H0 guns. I have annihilated and scattered many gun-speer armies with that! Its a very difficult tactic but it pays off well if you don't loose control of your horses:
the guns are just useful decoys in that scenario, good for a couple of volleys and for focusing the enemies attention on them while the cav moves...hehe
I quote Bruce Lee: "Be water, my friend, be water! Never let the enemy touch you, YOU touch the enemy..." That describes it well enough, its also the Mongol fighting style, in fact the art of warfare used by all the great horse-warriors of yore!
Man, i can tell you, THAT was a fantastic and close battle but AMP won in the end! How did he do that? Again he saw what i was doing and acted accordingly: He spread his spears wide in order to block any flanking attempt while vigourously attacking some of my cav with his own, sending his slower spears as reinforcements. Still, i almost won...almost...hehe. My Cav simply couldn't move as freely as in sooo many other battles, that was it.
Damn! I must smoke another pipe, i thought before trying to beat him again! That i did, we chatted a bit, he seemed to like my style and than i challenged him again:
I brought an army consisting of 8 ranged units ( Don't worry: I almost always use 4 max armies http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif ). This time i wanted to shoot him into pieces! But guess what AMP marched into battle: 8 guns + 7 Über-ashis + 1 YS-Taisho!! I managed to scatter his guns with fast Cavarchers so that i had a strong advantage with my ranged units, guns and archers, but by that i forced him to rush forward and that he did with great skill, owned only by a very few players!!
One game won and three lost! F...!!!!
Come on AMP, another one! Gladly, he said, I believe he had lots of fun too!
Lets try the Naginata again! But not the surprise-version! Move slowly with your guns in the front, Naginata behind them, some Nodachi sneeking around and strong cav in the back, i thought! That tactic had also worked very well against many opponents including some well-known ones... Its a trap once again, only this time the enemy shall be fooled into believing that the battle is going to get a frontal assault. Out of the suuden i move...hehe don't want to say more here but you may already guess it: AMP didn't fall for my little trick! He got into trouble when i managed to bring cav into his rear, but the Naginata broke before that cav-flanking had a decisive impact!
1:4!
What to do? AMP offered me another game and i accepted, already prepared in my mind for another loss. So i simpy chose a Naginata-wall to block any advance with cav to the flanks and guns firing into the enemy-charge from behind the Naginata-wall! Not very imaginative, i admit, but it worked. AMP had chosen a mainly Nodachi-rush and they broke fast before the heavy Naginatas...
Ok, I better stop now, i thought, especially because AMP gave me that last battle as a kind of present for my nice play. He didn't say so but i got that impression... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
AMP, you Giant! Its a pleasure for me to fight against such mighty warriors as you!
