I recently got back into Medieval after an extended hiatus (6 months?). I purchased Viking Invasion, cheerfully loaded it onto my PC, and commenced to playing.

I'm playing as the Danes, which I've never done before, and which are actually quite fun. I've also started farming generals v&v's by starting rebellions in newly acquired provinces. I'll basically send the general (most often a princeling) in to slaughter a group of archers, peasants, or whatever. I had built the current Heir to the Throne of the Great Danish Empire (mmmmm, danish....) up to a five star general w/ skilled defender.

Well, it just so happened that after crushing one rebellion, a MUCH larger one rose up. No problem, this guy wields six stars in defense, I'll just load up on the huscarles and smote these guys, right? It worked like a charm, and the prince even managed to kill/capture some 100-200 rabble rousers...and developed the vice that says you are unwilling to participate in hand to hand combat in battle, -2 morale WTF

All this guy has been doing is getting his hands dirty smoting peasants here, and brutalizing rebels there Now, for no apparent reason, he's 'Not So Bold' God, now I remember why this game can be so frustrating...

Maybe the quality of the troops he slays determine that vice. But it seems maybe when you get a tough general that every so many battles his valour needs to up or he gets it. Or maybe just plain jealousy among 1 of your lower generals that started the rumor. Or maybe just the programmers way weakening those uber generals

Yeah, I just wrote it off to bad luck. I mean, he has so many other good V&V's that the 2 morale penalty doesn't hurt THAT much...plus, I use a lot of huscarles, which don't rout easily.

The vice also saysthat 'this reputation, however unwarranted, blah blah blah...'

So its almost rubbing it in my face by saying 'well, we know he's not REALLY a coward since you've had him kill around 1200 assorted troops with his bare hands, but his troops heard this rumor going around, so you're stuck w/ it. sucker'

Ouch...that has to hurt.

I've never seen that particular vice in my generals tho...only in enemy gens. I always use my gens to chase routers.
