I get a game going, wait 20 min to have it full, start the game and find that a stupid IDIOT got artilery when the battle name is battle no art.
When asked to switch it off he called me a dumbass and said that he did not have any honor anyway.

I'm pissed and fed up of such idiots.
I'm able finally to find the time to play and then get such jerks in my game.

Bahhh

Sorry for all the other guys that did not have any fault in this, but I quit the game cause I was pissed, closing the server.

Better just play clan wars.

Sorry to hear about your problem. There will be idiots wherever you go. I don't understand the mentality of people who join games and then break the rules. This is a stretch, but maybe he didn't understand what no art meant. I gather from your strong wording that this isn't the first time this has happened. Shame on them.

How did you frame the objection? The more harshly you rebuke someone the more defensive and snotty they will get. If you were a little too strident in pointing out his violation then it might have contributed to his language.

Granted, the guy could be a bastard, but maybe as Gregoshi points out he was too new to appreciate no art.

I don't doubt that the intarw3b is fully of pricks, but sometimes people act like pricks only when they are getting defensive.

I don't understand why people don't like it when people use art. All you need to do is get some cavalry near them and they're gone. A whole unit is just scared off. I'd rather have a unit of men than have art. Also, art does make us more sophisticated (I was one of those guys who didn't know what art meant the first time).

Every player who has been around for more than a week has the same type of story - someone who won't adhere to the rules, or won't communicate or help out. In pre-patch MTW it was always quitters we complained about - when they routed they would quit, and crash the game.

My impression is that the average quality of MTW players is higher than other games, and there are lots of decent folks in the lobby. Please don't let a few less-than-honorable type cause you to leave the MP community.

The lack of honor by some online is very frustrating. One can be a jerk and hide behind the anonymity of the internet and there is little anyone else can do.

Try these ideas:

Using private chat, invite folks that you know you will enjoy fighting with. We frequently organize a 4v4 'behind the scenes' and then use the password feature.

Use the #ignore and #ban functions. Once someone intentionally ruins a game add him to your list.

Before the game starts clearly spell out the rules, firmly but politely let everyone know that you will end the game if anyone breaks those rules.

Note to Grego - please move this to Jousting Fields maybe some other MP guys have some more thoughts

Basicly there is only one way to prevent it. Password. Its like expecting the world to be a peacefull place without any sad people around. It just wont work.

Find a group of players you enjoy playing with and have fun. You can allways try a no pass game later again, once you think your ready again :D. Just let them know what the rules are, and if they break them, indeed ignore + ban.

THere is nothing you can do about it further. There is no such thing as IP block I think? I guess it works on name only.

That is the difference between newbie players and n00bs. I only use the word n00b for players who dont stick to rules, call you a **** and generally dont want to learn :)

newbie's are players who are new, like to learn and listen well ;) (your general nice guy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif )

They also come in an other form. I hosted a game a couple of days back, (Kenchi vs others). I stepped away from the computer for maybe 2 minutes. The game had loaded in the mean time, couldnt have been there longer then 30 seconds or so and I was about to hit the attack button (weather selection) and a guy asked why the **** I wasnt starting the game. Ignore and ban http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-juggle.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif (after we routed him offcourse)

I have to agree with ichi. Although I don't play MTW online (only campaign), my experience with individuals in the Org has been great. I play Magic: The Gathering Online and the sportsmanship of individuals there is just appalling. What's worse is you can only "block" a limited number of people, so my "blocked" list was full within about three days...

Quick Fix:

Custom Maps.

My experience is that the "lamers" dont take the time to download the custom map packs. Forget the password, just install some custom maps and host them.

As soon as you start hosting custom maps, the level of play and sportsmanship you experience will dramatically improve.

Custom maps are the quick fix to these types of problems.

I would have thought "no art" meant no arranging your units into pretty formations.

That could be a good idea, ichi, but then how about the new people?, you would never play them this way, if you just stick to trusted and tested gamers...

The "ban" "ignore" usually works well. It takes a determined a-hole to keep making up new names and looking for your games to ruin. I have had a few individuals who did this, but I outlasted them, until they either gave up, or changed thier name and behaved, so I wouldn't ban them again. :)

Kaatar: Most do not like arty because it:

1. Delays the actual playing of the game. You have to dodge cannonballs for the first few minutes, until enemy runs out. Put this with the long drawn out Pavise battles and you can understand that most players would rather play more games than be bored by long shoot outs.

2. In late era, Serpintines have the unusual ability to kill your general unit on the first shot. It may be a bug, but it has never been addressed, so banning arty is the easiest thing to do. It is especially easy to kill the general unit once the armies are engaged, which in most cases means a big hit to morale and an easy rout.

3. In 2v2 and up games it is more of a problem than in 1v1. I have seen a player get 16 arty units, with his partners protecting him with their units. Once the enemy engages, then the arty is loosed and all enemy armies run. The morale hit is too great and when combined with the killing of an enemy general, it is way too easy. Allowing arty in new player games is not too bad, but allowing it in games where many veteran players are, it is too easy and ruins the game for many.

Absolutely correct SwordsMaster, if we only played with folks we already know then the new guys would have a pretty tough time.

Imeant for this suggestion to be usedby only those folks who are so upset that they are considering quiting the game rather than deal with the odd game-ruiner.

I intend to continue jumping into what others call 'newb stew' for as long as I play the game. Sure, every now and then I turn red and go bang my head against the wall because some jerk refused to be honorable, but most of the games I enter are quite enjoyable.

If the host states 'no arty' and you dont like that your option is to not join....not bitch about the hosts game limits...

bit of topic, but personally i find the term 'noob' very irritating - like there's something special about having spent half of your life playing a computer game and then feeling 'better' than someone else because of it. I usually find people who use the term 'noob' have an attitude problem - you know the type, they order you to do something on the battlefield which isn't in your or the team's best interests, and when they get their army wasted, start ranting on about ****ing 'noobs' and how did you get into a clan? etc..etc.. - fact that you end the game with twice as many kills as them, and you've been playing the game for the past 4 years doesn't come into it..

There is no such thing as a 'noob' just *rs*h*l*s and decent people. Sorry, rant over http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

i wont go into this BUT what u must realizes is: someone who brings art tend's to be a noob and i mean noob as in newbie, not a poddle in sheeps clothes, and a newer member wont understand what art means unlike us

there's no point in getting upset about it as it will always happen http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif just relax and remember if he has 1 art unit, then he has one less horse\sword unit hehe move fast, move in and victory will be yours don't sit back and let him shoot the s**te out of ur troops.

im a noob but i know arty is a waste of time, the most annotying thing that happened to me was in a 2v2 game, my ally brought 16 art units it was a small map so the enemy cav easily routed him an left me to lose a 2v1 :( the invite people u know would be ok but then u would never get a chance to play some of the good noobs like me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

I do not post but I have a comment to make.

I have played in a game with ********* and his attitude and language are quite frankly appalling. I notice that his post has been edited for language which doesn't surprise me.
He has been on my banned and ignore list for some time now. The guy should learn some manners and patience.

If these are our rules, then so be it.
(and our rules are good rules, imho)

Still I feel that in his one and only post on our forum Sweetzero was not intendig to flame anyone.

Rather I read his post in that he wants to say (how shall I put it ?) that rude comments recieved in gamechat on certain occasions may well be self-invoked by a host who himself rudely rebukes another player.

did I get that across or is everyone confused now whith what I am trying to say http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

A complete bastard ( ie. Me ) could look at it and say the the only thing that sweetzero has done is posted inflammatory comments... however I feel that sweetzero was merely unfamiliar with the forum rules and so he will not be hung, drawn and quartered.

This sort of post just starts members flaming each other, and winds up dragging everyone down to mindless abuse of other players.

I have based my editing of sweetzero's post on a section in the Forum rules (http://www.totalwar.org/site/Rules.shtml) that relates to naming multi-player cheaters etc... it is felt by a majority of Org members that it is undesirable to name other players and allege poor standards etc.

I believe that the same principal applies to sweetzero's post as well....
