View Full Version : Some possible rules scenarios

Since the Recon Mod came out I have been thinking that maybe one other way to shake things up a little and get people (me included) out of the 6 cavs/6 swords/4 pavs would be to try some scenarios (or rules if you prefer).

In the past we have tried '2 max', 'no arty', '4 cav max', etc.

I'd like some feedback - are you happy with the current way the game has evolved? would games with rules or restrictions interest you? Do you have an idea for a rule?

I know that one problem with this idea has always been the occasional sap who shows up with an army that violates the rules and then says '$cr*w y@u'

My ideas so far:

No units with the word Chivalric or Feudal in their name (probably have to be Catholic armies only)

No ranged units (or how I learned to rush and be ok with it) or no xbows/arb/guns

One unit max of each type (take it to the extreme)

and of course

Naptha only

Wha dya think?

I think the only thing you can do is to have self impossed rules as "community wide rules" simply dont happen and some stuff just isnt as fun (For example, I cant stand max of 2 because its boring imo) As for your questions: Yes, No, No http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Such rules would be good for the game, but you have to find a way to screen out the people who just won't communicate. I think that this would be handled best by a large non-clan organization like UGLI. Another idea is to make a "Broadband Summit" where regular hosts of 4v4 games like Elmo get together and agree to promote custom maps, mods and rules and to also share ban and ignore lists.

I had an idea of my own for custom rules. Very low florins and a minimum of eight unique units per player. This would create some variety among the Catholic factions and would financially cripple Knight-heavy armies. The florins would also be low enough to create counters to Byz inf. It's worth a shot, but the player mindset has to be to play along, not to exploit the system.

Nice idea, ichi. I like it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

Although I am still new enough to the game to find the current 10k armies still challanging, I think a bit of variation is always good.

One day I joined a "gunpowder units only" game.
Was very different, but good fun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

But yes, Kongamato, you are very right there. Also an attitude to just enjoy a fun game and not too be overly competitive will help.

well, if we play the recon mod, then it automatically takes players out of that mold, as they can't have arb's, xbows are of limited importance and spears are balanced again (and will be more so, along with cav by the sounds of it in the next version).

I've always thought rules were a good idea, but in my experience if you put up a game with rules like 'no cmaa'or '3 max', then people just don't want to join - they prefer their little 4 arb, 4 cmaa, 4 ck steppe map world.

Of course, i'd be interested in knowing of others who are of this rules frame of mind though...

Isent it funny that a game with so many units has basically 4-5 that people use lol, the cwb rules change that and make you think about your units fine for tourneys i guess. Do faction v faction games and make rules up as you go along Myself alrowan jun and youssof do this and its good fun Presenting new ways of playing in 4v4 games one game turkish vs byzantine on a hilly map was rather nice us as turks attacking..great game Also one of the better games ive played in vi was a 4v4 turks v egyptian Just ask alrowan :) it was a classic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I lost in the turkish v egypt game but really really enjoyed it :)

swoosh is right, weve had some awesome games lately, most of them, if not all have been faction vs faction. And when u stick the game on a hilly map with exp generals in the attackers chair, it really pushes what u use in the battle field, from tactics to army selection. Your normal 3 pav, 6 inf rest cav army wont do when ur attacking, instead you need to think of who is where, what avenues of attack u will use, find the most adventageous terrain (or the one where your enemy will have the least advantage over you cus u face a large hill with 4 campers) then just go for it.

if anyone wants to see some of the replays later, ill upload them to my clansite, theyre well worth it (apart from two anti-climaxes with players leaving/dropping when the battle reaches the final face off)

which reminds me of one of our most enjoyable battles. we were turks attacking on a hilly map. they were byz. We went off to a good start, routing one, then pushing another two into submission, but our impetuosity almost cost us the game. With the final byz army ralying on a rear hill to fend off two tried armies. It caused a chain rout, that eventually led to two small armies facing across a nice deep valley. As we were resting our men, the last byz player had to leave :( end of battle

ichi's ideas could work but i think there are to many umm people who would join then take a regular army so it would have to be a pw game 4 peeps u know.

Well lately I simply made ppl use 4 different factions in 4 vs 4 -s , it ads a nice variety in early and viking eras
, its even useful in high as you limit the number of lbow noobs to 1 ..... As its a simple rule usually ppl grasp it even in open games ...

To limit the number of units ,max2 and max1 is fine for competitions but too much work in friendly games ...

PS: I would host custom maps if some1 convinces Shaka to download em :D ....
