If you like having fun with bridge attacks, besides the usual battles involving rivers that you can see by clicking on the map (then holding cursor over an adjacent territory),

I just picked apart some data from the campmap\startpos\HIGH.TXT file (its Borders Info section) to find that there are three instances where you can attack land from sea, and always wind up with a river map. These are:

Pomerania (from the Baltic), and
Kiev and Moldavia (from the Black Sea)

A quick check of EARLY and LATE.TXT shows that these three are true there, too. (There could be more, but I doubt it.)

Bon appetit... it's all water under the bridge http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

maybe it should be river by the sea? more difficult to get past the bridgehead after landing I suppose

maybe they think that the river in that area is more important then the fact that you're coming from the sea.

also, because the river always mounds in the sea, it's not necessary to cross the river because you're either on one side or the other, and then the river wouldn't be fun anymore

Nods... or perhaps it's a simple approximation of something like Constantinople or - what's that city in Spain that's out on a heavily fortified spit of land, Cadiz? Perhaps it's a tip of the hat to the idea that, you're gonna get 'squeezed' trying to attack what's important in this province, any way you try.
