From her official site...
Quote[/b] ]My Gubernatorial Platform

The most important issue facing California right now is our $38 billion deficit and 6.7% unemployment rate. California needs a governor who will get our finances in order As a ?political outsider,? I have fresh, original ideas for helping the state generate revenue and reduce its deficit. Here are just some of them:

1. Legalize gay marriage in California. This will generate a tremendous amount of revenue for the state as a honeymoon destination.

2. Tax breast implants. From Beverly Hills alone, we should bring in millions in tax revenue. (Note: I am all-natural and I personally discourage the use of implants&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

3. Make lap dances a tax deductible business expense. This will help grease the wheels of business in California and stimulate our economy.

4. If I?m elected Governor, I will wire the Governor?s Mansion with live web cams in every room. We will create a pay site, and all money collected will go toward reducing the deficit. Californians will get to see their government in action - literally (Also, we will have people from around the globe helping to pay off our debt, so it doesn?t all fall on the shoulders of Californians.)

5. I will create a ?Porn for Pistols? program to take handguns off the streets. Dealing with the violence and injuries associated with handguns is a huge drain on our state's resources.

6. As Governor, I will recruit fellow performers from the adult video industry as ambassadors of good will. These ambassadors will be a great help to California when it comes to such things as negotiating rates for buying electricity from neighboring states.

7. I will coordinate the state?s unemployment and jury systems, so that anyone who applies for unemployment will instantly be called for jury duty. This will save California state and local governments millions of dollars, because we won?t have to pay for jury duty. It will also relieve those with jobs from the stress of serving on lengthy juries.

8. I will fight the federal government's attempts to harass the adult video industry. Adult video is an $11 billion industry that creates more than $23 million in taxes each year for the state of California. We can't afford to lose this tax base http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

a pretty useful link on where every major magazine publication photo/graphics dept. is going, on the use of photoshop.

http://homepage.mac.com/gapodaca/digital/bikini/index.html

start with the above link and then go to the main page.
i have a crew of three guys who do nothing but sit around and do this all day (okay, they tell a lot of dirty jokes, too.) they get really good and then move on to advert jobs where the real money is - they also constantly complain that they're not happy and wish they had different jobs.

I like his shoe (http://homepage.mac.com/gapodaca/digital/shoe/index.html) and if you roll over the menu bar you can see his method.

yup. that's the sort of thing i'm talking about, soly. good site. that says it pretty well. i was thinking more along the lines of con artists and criminal evidence where apparencies become reality because of a doctored photo, but i guess advertising falls into a similar category.

back in the 8 bit days we began to see these emerge as a sort of fantasy thing. i remember chops of markie post made nude by some clever p-shopper. and if you take it back a bit further we've had airbrushing of models almost as long as we've had photography. playboy magazine was famous for this. it's an interesting subject.

take it a bit further and you've got images made entirely from scratch in 3d modeling programs that are getting quite real looking. we are so visually oriented and so used to what you see is what you get, and the technology is evolving so fast, that 'models' may become a thing of the past. imagine sports illustrated swim suit issue as nothing but cgi :)

There is too much of a brightness difference between the Earth and the stars. To adjust the exposure enough to pick up the stars, the Earth would be so over-exposed that it would be unrecognizable white blob - in fact I'd be willing to bet the Earth light would bleed to cover the whole picture.

The nuns were actually quite funny - they asked a guy to take a group picture, but at least half of them had a camera and each wanted a separate picture with her own camera, so the guy took about 5-6 pictures with different cameras

And as a last one for today of course the Sagrada Familia - the cathedral is really impressive (and it is not even halfway finished, yet).

BTW, thanks Sinan for confirming that the picture could not be seen - as long as I am not able to figure out what the problem is I post just the links (hoping that these work)

Just as an addendum to the picture of the Sagrada Familia in a previous post, I found a picture of how the cathedral is supposed to look like when it is finished:

http://members.lycos.nl/gaudiworks/images/sagrad2.jpg

So far two of the facades, each with four of the "smaller" spires are finished - and these are already very impressing. The huge spires in the center are still missing - I wonder if I will live to see this monument finished...

Here's a shot I took day before yesterday with my new digital. This place is only a few blocks from where I live, and is aptly named "The Old Mill"

ftp://robertwhite29:12345678@upload.comcast.net/old_mill_030a.jpg

You may not know it, but many of you have seen this mill before. It was built as a focal point for a early sub-division built around a lake in the 1930's. It is full size, and the water wheel turns, but it was never a real working mill. The North Little Rock parks commission keeps it in repair and the local botanical association plants flowers and does all the landscaping

Anyway, it is a very famous (local) landmark since it was used in the opening scenes of the movie Gone With the Wind. Check it out next time you happen to watch the movie.

Krae:

Thanks. I am still experimenting, since digitals have a few more things to remember than 35mm's do. Stuff like white balance, compression, and resolution.

The camera is a Canon Powershot G3 digital. My old 18 year old Canon 35mm SLR finally gave up the ghost after being refurbished twice. I just couldn' justify putting anymore money in it, so I decided to go digital.

Canon has just discontinued the G3's this year in favor of newer model called the G5. The newer G5 is 5 megapixels while the G3's are 4 megs. The newer camera comes in black while the older one comes in silver. Otherwise the cameras are identical. Here's what my camera looks like. The little black card is a wireless remote.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/G3/ZREMOTE.JPG

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/G3/ZLCDOPENBACK.JPG

The G3 actually got slightly better reviews than the G5, so it seemed like a good buy. Camera shops are closing out the G3's to stock the newer model, so the G3's are bargain priced right now. You can find a G3 on line in the $350 price range as opposed to the $800 price tag on the newer G5.

I guess these cameras would be considered one step below a digital SLR. I would have much preferred a digital SLR, but I couldn't justify the 4 digit price tags.

By the way, Canon is just hitting the market with the first digital SLR priced just under $1,000 that includes a lens.
Still too much money for my photographic needs, but maybe someday.

Cheers

yeah, i saw a thing on tech tv about the new slr digitals. looked good.

i bought a digital when they first came out, so mine is only a 640 x 480 type. i hardly use it cause of the low quality. i've still got my old 35mm canon F1 when i really want to get a decent pic, but it's been a while since i used that also.

any more, i seem to be on the editing side of photography :) care to post a picture of yourself? ;)

however, i do know that tech tv has p-shop artists on from time to time and there are some good p-shop folks on there and they always link to their sites. so, try www.thescreensavers.com and look for articles on p-shop and then the links to the p-shop sites from there. and of course our own soly is pretty damn handy with p-shop; you could always ask him.

On another forum, we were talking about Civil War infantry battles recently

Later, it got me to thinking about an old tintype I have of one of my ancestors who fought for the CSA., so I dug it up an took a shot of it with my digital.

Here's a picture of my great, great uncle--Robert F. White.

ftp://robertwhite29:12345678@upload.comcast.net/myfilelocker/great_uncle_002a.jpg

Robert and two other of my great grandfather's brothers all fought at Shiloh. (My great grandpa was too young to go at the time) Robert was the only brother to survive the battle, and died shortly after the war.

He is wearing a Mexican War type forage cap, but I have no information about whether he fought in the Mexican War or not. Actually he appears to be a naval officer, but according to family history this was not the case.

You can't see it very well in the my photo, but there are two revolvers (probably Colt Navies) tucked into his belt although one could be large enough to be a Colt dragoon.

Also the double button jacket would seem to indicate that he was an officer, and I seem to remember my grandpa saying he was a captain. My grandpa (paternal) died in 1957 so it's been a long time since I last heard all of the stories.

l won't bother you with the cock and bull story about Robert's and his brother's exploits at Shiloh because it sounds like the kind of bogus family legends that develop after a story gets retold so many times over the years.

Just thought it might be of interest.

Cheers

Observer, The revolver looks like a Colt Walker. It was a Mexican war era weapon and would go with the uniform. If you had one today it would be worth a LOT of money. I do a lot of family research and I personally like to find the horse thieves and bandits in my genealogy. They are harder to find because they didn't want to be found even when they were alive.

I have studied that photo quite a bit, but really haven't taken the time to show it to any knowledgeable experts.

The enlarged photo I took with my digital camera kind of washed some of the detail, and it makes the pistol appear ro be larger than it is.

I am pretty sure that the gun is not a Walker for a couple of reasons. Walkers had huge elongated cylinders to take a heavy powder charge. They are reputed to be one of the most powerful hand guns ever made including Dirty Harry's 44 magnum.

They also had square back trigger guards and the loading lever handle flared out slightly to a bulbous end. Since there was no lever catch on the barrel, a common fault of the Walker was that the spring held loading lever would flop when the gun was fired. This was later corrected in the Dragoon models.

Anyhow, the gun in the picture has a round trigger guard, a normally proportioned cylinder, and the loading lever does not appear to flare.

I think some of the later improved Dragoons also had round trigger guards, so a Dragoon is not out of the question. It all a matter of scale. If the gun is a Colt Navy then my great, great uncle was a bit of a shrimp.

One other thing. I was wrong in stating that this is a tintype. I finally had the nerve to take the frame apart, and discovered that this picture is actually an ambrotype. Ambrotypes were done on glass instead of metal plates as tintypes were. Tintypes were more common since they were less fragile to deal with, especially for the itinerant traveling photographers of the day.

Still, Walker or not, I wish at least one of those weapons had survived, and been passed down in the family. Even though not as rare as the Walkers, the Dragoons are pretty scarce.

The last couple of Dragoons I saw at a gun show were each priced in the $15,000 range, and that was several years ago. You could probably retire on sale of a previously undiscovered Walker.

Cheers

P.S. I did inherit my grandpa's 1873 Winchester rifle. It's in a 38-40 caliber with an octagon barrel, and is still in shooting condition today. The serial number places it in the early 1880's production. I bagged my first deer with it in the 1960's. I was about 16 years old at the time and the gun was about 80 Man, that old rifle put a lot food on my family's table over the years.

The horse thieves were all on my grandma's side of the family. She was 1/4 Cherokee by the way.

this is from one of Dimeolas's art works. i altered his original to give me the darker one and then applied both to the morph program. fun stuff.

Dimeolas is a patron here on the .org and has a nice site up with some of his art work. i forget the url for it, so if someone knows it, why feel free to post it.

However, you can view the picture in all its glory - that would be a 6200x6200 image available in an 80mb jpg or a 100mb tiff.

Go to this page (http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/archive/releases/2004/07/) and select one of the mirrors - demand has been high for the image.

I'm in the middle of downloading it right now. It has been downloading for about 30 minutes now and I only have half the image, and this is on a cablemodem. It is taking a long time but the image is spectacular so far http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Yeah, the picture is large enough that you actually can explore it. Galaxies of all colours, shapes and sizes. Some pretty groupings too. I even saw several galaxies distorted into ( shapes due to gravitational lensing (yes, gravity does affect lightwaves).

The poor thing must be distorted by a strong gravitational field like that of a black hole. Nature can be cruel.

I was scanning some of my Civil War reenactment pictures tonight and thought I'd share a few.

First, a couple of pictures of some Confederate Cavalry. It amazes me how some of these folks really look the part. In the second picture, the second cavalryman from the right looks to be a rare female soldier reenactor.

Last up is a picture from a "live fire" mortar competition. Note the cannonball just above the column of smoke.

I have been to a number of re enactments in the UK, but it isn't as big over here - the ACW period - for obvious reasons, which is a shame. I always meant to get involved but never got round to it. I would really like to go to Gettysburg one year on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of July to see the big re enactment I am told happens every year, something I have penciled in, in the very near future.

Gregoshi
04-29-2004, 01:15
JAG, the big reenactments are the 5 year ones. They just had the 140th last year, so you have 4 years to plan your visit for the next big one. On off years, they have about 3,000 reenactors. I was at the 135th anniversay reenactment in 1998 for the Pickett's Charge battle. They estimated about 16,000 reenactors participated and I personally counted over 90 cannons.

Wanna see some of those pictures? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wideeyed.gif That was what I was mostly scanning last night. I'll have to compress them a bit first.

Yes please, I would love to see more pictures, I am not only interested in your civil war period but totally in awe of it. I still wonder not only about the different outcome but about which side I really would have stood for on principle, it is a tough one. I of course see the validaty of the union position in keeping the United states together and abolishing slavery but I just as much - fif not more - see the position of the CSA. States rights was meant to - and still meant to be - such an integeral part of the way of life. Anyway I could ramble for ages, and I thoroughly enjoy talking about the period, though normally over here it is educating people to the real position of the CSA rather than prejudice and disgust normally aimed at them.

I was even planning a trip for this year - if I took another gap year - where I would go over there for about 2 months and just visit all of the major east coast battlefields in order, I still very much hope and wish I get round to it in the future, I will somehow not feel happy until I have.

Thank you also about the info on Gettysburg re enactment, I would love to see pickett's charge re enacted, to see the terrain they marched over and the distance, to see if it was really impossible like so many say - and was proved to a large extent. Yes, I need to stop typing I could go on for days.

Hey JAG if you are interested in seeing the reenactments it is best to visit that site of the battle the day of the year the battle was fought and for Gettysburg the dates are from July 1st to the 3rd from a quick look on the internet but I could have sworn it was a four day battle. This was a major battle due to the fact this was the first and only time the confederates had marched into northern territory taking the war to them. Also for major events like that you need to get hotel reservation 1 year in advance or you are SOL

JAG
04-29-2004, 02:55
Well you history of the era seems a little hazy - NO disrespect meant. It was a 3 day battle, it should not even have been a 3 day battle it should have been a major Confederate victory single day battle, but there you go. Waiting until 2063 might be somewhat of a wait, think I would have felt condemned to go before then :p

The confederates previously marched into Northern territory, and there was many battles in northern territory. When the CSA first invaded the north in '62 the bloodiest day of America's history was the result. The battle of Antietam. A HUGELY outnumbered Confederate force manage to cling on and withdraw back to southern territory through a mixture of inspired generalship - as ever - from Lee and poor generalship from McClellan.

As promised, what follows is a series of 7 pictures from the 135th Anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1998.
There were about 16,000 reenactors and over 90 cannons. The reenactment field was about 2-3 miles (3-5km) from the actual battlefield.
The field dimensions were about 3/4 of a mile between the Union and Confederate lines and 1/3 of a mile across. From my vantage point,
the Confederates are advancing from the right to the distant Union lines on my left. Except for the panorama picture,
all were taken with a 300mm telephoto lense to get closer to the action. The panorama was taken with a standard 55mm lense.
Without further ado...

When the cannonade finally subsided, out from the trees that lined Seminary Ridge, came the men of Pickett's,
Pettigrew's and Trimble's divisions.

I love the cannons because you can feel the concussion when they fire. In fact, at reenactments they usually tell you to turn off your car alarm as a cannon firing can set them off. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

BKS, see questions 7-9 here (http://www.cwartillery.org/primer.html).

The quick answer is, like the musket, gunpowder is loaded into the guns, but they omit putting projectiles into the barrel. I also think they use something less than a historically correct amount of gunpowder in the guns.

Here is an example of an okay picture of cannons firing:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gbresslr/images/PC135Cannonade1.jpg

And here's what it looks like if you are a little slow on the shutter button:

The festival took place at the ruins of the "Burg (=castle) Königstein"

There are actually quite a lot of these little castles (sometimes ruins, sometimes still habitable) in the area around Frankfurt - and during spring and summer a lot of these have nice little festivals like the one at Königstein.

All kidding aside, GB McClellan was the reason the US finally won the war. He built the Army of the Potomac. Tremendous job. His problem was he loved the Army too much. In order to win, one must be willing to risk the destruction of your own people. Not sure I would have the stomach for that either.

I am not defending McClellan, just being pragmatic. He has been accused of not acting on the lost orders. In reality, no one thought they were legit; it was too easy. He was also accused of not engaging the 5th Corps--probably the best in the Army. There were numerous reasons for that, not the least of which being they were the only reserve standing between Lee and Washington DC. Why didn't he aggressive pursue Lee after the battle? Glance at the casualty figures. The Army had been decimated. You need a little time to regroup, refit, take care of the thousands of wounded--US and rebel--and bury the dead. All that, and no one knew if or how badly Lee had been hurt.

In order to make a judgement on what I would do in a specific situation, I try to limit my knowledge to what any commander would have definately know at a given time. Then put that into context of the period in question, logistics, political & public opinion, chances of success or failure, and possible gains or consequences of any action taken. In this particular situation, the best possible gain would have been another engagement, again on the attack, where the rebel army could have been defeated--but not destroyed. That's important. They would have fought another day. The complete destruction of an army is very rare, and that early in the war, the US wasn't in a position to capitalize on just a win. It's always far more complicated than it looks to us today. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Edit: OCATAVIAN, that was my last event. Gettin' too old for that crap. Fifty year old soldiers don't last long in the field. Besides, after twenty some odd years, I figured I'd accomplished all I had needed and seen all that I had wanted. In the early days we used to wonder what it would be like to field full regiments, brigades, mounted batteries, cavalry troops, etc. Well, been there done that. There were more troops in the reenactment of Picket's Charge than were engaged during the actual battle. What else do I need to do?

Also, the Ord Manual specifies 60 grains of musket powder (2F) as the propellent, pushing a 550 gr. conical lead ball (Minie`). That does do the job.

Alas, I am not a reenactor, though I've thought about it. The pictures were taken from the grandstands. We saw some open seats and took them. Unfortunately they were nearer the Confederate end of the field - away from the major action. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Yes I was octavian. And the 135th Antietam was my very first and is responsible for me getting the bug. I'll have to scan and post some pictures from those two events. The Antietam location is difficult for picture taking because it lacks elevation in some of the fields. Gettysburg puts up bleachers which helps get better pictures and there is a little elevation in the view areas.

BTW, at the 140th Antietam, I met an English couple who were reenactment fans. In fact, the husband was a Confederate reenactor who came over to participate. I had a very nice chat with them over lunch.

Perhaps we should take the non-picture related Civil War discussion to a new thread and let the pictures do the talking here.

More randomness:

First up is a picture of Comet Hale-Bopp from 1997 taken in the morning twilight. Note the two tails of the comet. The bright, slightly curved tail is the dust tail. The fainter, straight, bluish ion tail points towards the 11 o'clock position. Surprisingly, it shows up better on the scan than it does on the print. Interesting. BTW, the picture is a 15 second exposure taken with a standard 55mm lens mounted on a tripod. You don't need a telescope to take decent night sky pictures.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gbresslr/images/HaleBopp1f.jpg

Next is a picture taken at a Civil War reenactment. For this one I took my son and a couple of his friends. After the day's battle, we heard children's voices coming from a wooded area. The boys grabbed their toy muskets and headed into the woods. I followed, playing the role of war photographer. Inside the woods, at least 20 kids were having their own re-enactment. It seems the Confederates had control of a huge rock in the woods and the Union army was ordered to take that rock. The picture below shows the strong Confederate position in the background and the boys in blue, armed with everything from muskets to light sabres(kids' imginations), prepare their assault.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gbresslr/images/RockAttackf.jpg

The last picture was taken at the same children's reenactment above. As we looped around the Confederate Rock, I got close to it. A young girl (in the picture) came up to me and in the sweetest voice said Please, you must come and take a picture of James. So I did. This picture of James captivates me. There is something about the expression on his face that I find totally engaging. I give you James:

greg,

i too found something a bit 'haunting' about that boy, so i thought i'd do something with your pic to bring this out a bit more.

http://mizus.com/kraellin/rebelboy1-k-1.gif

i reduced the red and added some lighting and a bit of tweaking on the face to 'clean it up'. other than that, there ya go.
