Just registered and thought I'd say hi. I'm been a visitor for a while and I thought I'd step into the light.

For your delectation, I will now give a brief account of my latest campaign in MTW (not VI) - HRE Expert.
Decided to go defensive and just take all the nearby rebel provinces, as far as Lithuania, while I built up my trading network and sent a crusade to Antioch.
Crusade reached Anatolia, feinted into Tripoli, drawing out half the defending army, and took Antioch, but not the castle. Egyptian King attacked, and his death allowed my crusade to fend off twice their number, with heavy losses on each side.
Egyptians attacked again, but again my brave crusaders killed the enemy general and fended off about three times their number, but only 100 crusaders were left. There were now more men inside the castle than there were outside.
Egyptians attacked again, this time with ten times my number, and my brave crusaders were lost attempting to retreat.
I launched a new crusade immediately, and then the French attacked. I defended successfully, and the game crashed. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif I restarted and lost. I restarted and lost ... I restarted and retreated, then attacked again next go.
The Polish, encouraged by my retreat from the French, declared war, followed by the Italians and Hungarians, and then my King's own dear son. I supported said son, in the hope that he would have a positive influence.
Anyway, long story short, I now own three provinces, but my crusade did take Antioch and I managed to kill the Egyptian King, this time heir-less, so it's not all bad. I've also managed to get both my balance and income into the black http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif so I have the utmost confidence that I can dominate the world http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Bye for now,
Cat.

Welcome Schrodinger's Cat http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I suggest getting VI too, especially when it's pretty cheap nowadays.

Good luck

PS: Take a look at the Apothechary. Maybe you can find a solution to your crashes there.

Welcome to The Org Schrodinger's Cat http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I have noticed that when I crusade the enemy will retreat into the castle and then rally from adjacent provinces, and also that artillery is rare in Crusade stacks.

Try making a couple of Trebuchets or Mangonels in advance and then drop them onto the Crusade before it leaves your homelands. That way when they get to their destination the castle will be a little easier to attack.

Greetings, Schrodinger's Cat

Consider hiring some mercenary siege weapons in the home provinces and adding them to your Crusade. You don't have to pay upkeep on mercs in Crusades. Merc siege weapons are affordable, anyway, but might as well save a few florins.

Or don't crusade, despite the glorious achievement goals. Then you'll have both central Europe and the troops to defend it.

Thanks all. I did try and storm the castle without siege weapons - it was only a fort. Unfortunately they kept attacking every go so I didn't get a chance. I was slightly annoyed to find that fairly significant numbers of people could survive in the fort for four years (and it was still four years after the first year http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif ). I was expecting one or two, which would have been ok.
Also I think I might have done better to kill the prisoners I captured. I thought that would just perpetuate the Muslims view of bloodthirsty Christians http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif .
Anyway, in this case Doug was right. Home defence should have come first, and the crusades should have waited until I had naval support.

if they keep attacking you to stop you from invadig the castle you can try to fight the battle yourself and then cut of his escape routes, That way you can try to destroy every guy they have and without people, they can't defend the castle http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

That's always the dream, but it becomes easier said then done when they outnumber you three to one and you lost you're last cavalry two years back. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Hello Cat. Thanks for stepping into the light. That is a great name you sport there my friend.

I have to admire your fiesty determination in face of major setbacks. You remind me of a Black Knight from a Monty Python movie... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-thumbsup.gif

Welcome to the Org, Cat And, as words of encouragement, let me quote Dora from Finding Nemo: Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming… http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-thumbsup.gif

As for the siege weaponry, I have always relied on Inns to support me with mercenary artillery until I had a decent infrastructure and could build gunpowder weapons. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

LOL.
HRE loses arm: Tis' but a scratch.

HRE loses all other limbs. Enemies leave it only out of pity: Oh Had enough, eh? Come back and take what's coming to you, you yellow b*****ds I'll bite your legs off http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

I've still got Antioch, so I might be able to get hold of a holy hand grenade, with which to smite my enemies.

I haven't tried the HRE yet, but it sounds like your having one hell of a time. I've only played English yet, curse work getting in the way

Look forward to 'seeing you' round on the boards.

Welcome to the Org, fellow Junior Patron http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Try taking out Poland right from the start before they make alliances. They only have two provinces and killing them will raise your influnece (always an issue with the HRE). And some more friendly advice, never launch a crusade on expert mode unless you have a ton of troops to defend your homelands.

Cheers, Cat. Hope to see you around. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

But how can we be sure you were ever in that box. Or that you are Schrodinger's. Oh, where's your empirical evidence. oh, the paradoxes of singular and pluralistic interpretations of the universe

Merc storm em all http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif That way by taking more territory using merc u have got a lot more money and influence always good. however don't get carried away or you'll go bankrupt. Just take scandinavia and venice and you'll be rich with trade, then you can go on with more mercs and kick some more people into a drain. also assasanate the pope. dead popes can't excom you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif so you have a lot of territory and cash and no excom http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif Life is good
