One of the things I wish CA implements is the ability to move a general from one unit to a different unit. Or, at the least, let players choose what unit they want to stick their historical generals in. I want to move my generals from urban militia, beduoin camel warriors, etc. to more powerful units. Somehow, I don't think nations would put their best general on a peasant unit.

There's no reason why, for the Spanish, for example, generals who have distinguised themselves would move to a Lancer unit instead of an urban militia. Provided, of course, that you can build Lancers in the first place.

What if he can't ride a horse? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

I would much rather see that peasantlike units can never receive stars. This would automatically solve your problem.

In RTW I dont think generals will come from units. The general himself will be an unique unit.

FYI, Rome: Total War does not handle generals in quite the same way as MTW.

Generals have a bodyguard unit; the size of a general's bodyguard varies over time, and the nature of the bodyguard depends on his faction. Usually the man gets some decent cavalry as his guard, although in the case of barbarian warlords the Britons, for example, have a chariot-riding warlord complete with a unit of chariots.

I just like to use my strongest units, preferably cavalry units, as my generals. Even if they're not peasantlike units, like FMAA or Feudal Knights, once CMAA and Chivalric Knights come along, I'd want to upgrade them anyway. Especially if units like Lancers and JHI come along, I'd want them to be on those units.

It's especially annoying if your faction's heroes come out of crappy units. And even if they do come out of decent units, I still want to move them to the most powerful ones.

The Size of the Bodyguard varies? Does this mean we can add more men to it, or is it dependant on certain conditions?

Somehow I doubt it. It would seem more reasonable if it had something to do with his abilities... Maybe there is another stat for generals, Fighting (or something) where his rank gives him more and more men. V&Vs could also have some influence.
But I'm certain we won't have much influence on it per se.

I really like the sound of this http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

i used to get really bored of searching through all my units for a good general .... and then finding the only good general i hve is commanding a peasant unit http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif

sounds like we will have to build?? or get given?? general units in the same MTW had heirs

everything i've seen of Rome:total war seems to make it look like there is less pointless micromanagement (which spoilt many a MTW game late in the campaign) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

The N:TW mod uses a general like this. They created a specific general unit on horseback. I think it works really well, and so it should be good in R:TW.

(I'm not part of that esteemed group of modders by the way, I just naively choose this name without knowing who the Lordz were http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-oops.gif )

How does this work? Do you mean that only those specific general units can get stars? What if I created an army stack using only crappy peasantlike units? Will my general actually become a general unit or will I just have a unit with a no star "general"?

I suspect that units with no general last shorter, and are more for self defence.Units with a general are for longer offensive campaigns.

Now that it has come forth that you need familymembers for the positions as generals and governors, I think it is quite clear that you must assign a general to an army.

This is very much in line with the stated wish to have fewer but more important battles.
