Okay here's another discussion point from the IGN movies. What is this green highlighter doing at the base of selected troops. PLEASEEeeeeee...is it really necessary http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

On the campmap?

I think he's talking about the battles.
I hope they also include the old way of showing a selected army, but if they don't I think I can live with it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

O sorry but in the campmap a unit also get a green area around it.

[DnC]

Yep I know. I personally think that's very handy to see, that green blob around the unit in the campaign map that is.

Talking about the battle troop movement. Campmap is fine. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Yep i already brought this up its absolutely horrible

One thing though... sometimes in MTW battles, I'm trying to order one unit of my troops to engage an enemy unit that is already fighting with some of my other troops. I select the unit, move my mouse over the enemy unit, click, and D'OH Instead of giving the order to attack, I've selected my own currently engaged unit. Oops, now I have to find my other unit and try again...

Another situation arises sometimes when I'm trying to select a particular unit. I move my mouse over it and click, but miss by just a little bit. Oops Now the unit that I already had selected is marching towards the spot I just clicked on, when I wanted them to do something else entirely.

Now, both of these situations can be remedied. In the first situation, I should've used shift-click to make sure I wouldn't accidentally select one of my units. In the second, I should've pressed "Enter" to clear my current selection before trying to select again. Sometimes I forget these things, though.

Thus, maybe the green highlighter indicating which unit I'm pointing at right now wouldn't be such a bad thing. As long as it's not too conspicuous, it would help me avoid some of these mishaps without detracting much from the environment.

Well the current highlighter looks like toxic waste a real eye sore onn an otherwise beutiful game1

I definitely agree that CA should make these green arrow markers optional. They really do look terrible.

I like them. Now I can know which units I select.

so what if they look like toxic waste?

might my troops have discovered radioactive materials and used them in combat about two thousand years early?

if you can shoot radioactive posion arrows, that'd be nice http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It looks to me like they completely glow during deployment. During the battle they only have a colored tint to them. Still an ugly color, but not as bas as during deployment.

the green arrows
1) look ugly
2) help you to know what unit you have selected ( not that the other way didn't work)
3) detract from the imersve feel (i found the little "stab" the one army took at the other, as well as the "marching army" on the campmap turned me off as well.
4) *insert your positive comment here*
5) *insert your negative comment here*

I'm amazed you guys have brought this up this later...

We have known for some time via a few well placed shots in TC.

At any rate the game is probably too far ahead in development for CA to change it now.

thats if you have easy access to TC, i've only dl three TC vids, each one takes 30-45 mins to dl, then just as long to view. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

yes, very ugly. Wish it was optional to turn off.

I am all for a 'highlighter'. However, I would also prefer a slightly more modest colour. How about white ?

yes i also hope there is an option to turn off the green highlighter..i would not like to see a big green smudge in the middle of my battles when im selecting units. perhaps even a different colour would be nice and not so bright. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif and if you werent good at selecting your own units in MTW then you need more practice with a mouse. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-computer.gif

The 6 short IGN movies and the E3 movie with the elephant charge, certainly made the green highlighter very ugly. The bad quality of the movies might have compounded the matter, but it certainly doesn't look promising.

I'm not against a highlighter per se, but this one is not good at all. It is too bright, it almost overshadows the units. That is far from good.

If it is kept at this level I want an option to remove it.

It has recently (in the last ten years) been discovered that an off yellowish-green (the colour you see Bobbies wearing), is the most visible colour in all weather conditions. Perhaps that was the basis for CA’s choice of colour (that and some heavy drinking).

White was suggested by someone here, though my only concern with that would be if you were fighting an army during a blizzard.

The light yellow-green that Bobbies wear might be ok, but I would wonder how it might show up against certain shades of green grasses.

Perhaps a pastel red would work. It would be visible in all forms of weather, and against all kinds of terrain, but not so bright as to be obtrusive to the feel of the game. On the campaign map this colour would still allow you to see the extent of your army’s marching range, without being such an eyesore.

Thoughts?

I'll have to side with the opinion against the green highlighter. It pretty much destroyes the feel of the game.

Funktionallity over beauty is ok when you want an efficient program to do your work. But when it ocmes to gaming, I'd rather loose in style than win without it. The green marker gives a Sci-Fi feel to a game that should be all swords and sandals.

If it's too late to change it, I hope they can at least include an option to turn it off.

Reply You can turn off the green highlights
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I was at E3 this year one of the first things that I asked the Producer who was doing the demo of RTW was if you can turn off the green highlights and he informed me that you can. I can see where they would come in handy from a practical point of view, but I just can't get past how much they take away from the graphic atmosphere of the game.
