I just bought Shogun: Total War after a friend recommended it. I've never really played an RTS before. Not properly anyway. What can I expect?

You can expect lots of fun, with a adictive new type of game.

It's not only RTS, it's also TBS

You get Turn Based in the campaign map, with lots of management, and you get Real time in the Battles themselves (wich is really lots of fun).

Read the guides here in the forum's, play the tutorials, and just start having fun....soon you'll be wantin' to buy the Mongol Invasion, then Medieval, them Viking Invasion, then....*keeps blabbing about how great the game is...*

In sumation....have fun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

1) You can expect a great game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

2) First of all try to get a grip on the strategic part of the game. Understand what building gives you what, how the Economy works how you move units around.

3)If you have questions read through the manuals and the guides, there are some really great ones here on the .org
If you don't find in the guides what you are searching for, search in the forums on the .org and .com

4) After being able to manage the Strategy you should move to the tactical part of the game. Great battles await you, but the battlefield is a dangerous place: Use first of all simply tactics, learn the units and as you become better read how many differnt tactics exist.

The War Room is a great guide to the battlefield:

More info on

5) Patch the game, the lastest ones are avaiable here on the .org or on the .com

6) Be patient. Everybody of us made some incredible errors - later on you can look back with a smile http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

7) Enjoy the Game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Thanks guys.
The TBS part of it doesn't sound too clever. I remember Final Fantasy being really tedious for this.... In a battle, why would someone wait for the opposition to attack?

Because the game tries to model with some historical accuracy... and traditionally (not always) thats the way armies of the time fought. Opposition comes for you, and you take the defensive... because defensive gives you bonuses in the combat.

It's a very great game. I was a Civ kind of guy before Shogun, but now my civ's (all 3) are packed away. Now I play MTW, but still think highly of shogun. Once you are finished playing Shogun, I hope you give MTW a go. It's basicly shogun on a higher level, more advanced with more units.

The TBS helps you build anything you like. You have plenty of time to do all the moves you want to make. If it was real time, the computer would win much easier because of the vast ammoun of things you can and must do

The Shogun battles all take place in real-time. It's only the map section which is turn-based, like choosing what buildings to build where and what troops to train, and where to move your armies across the country, and so on. No FF-syndrome here. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It's a great game It has the best large-scale battles I've ever seen in a videogame (I've not played MTW, so I don't know if that's an improvement). But it's all great fun

If you want to enjoy the RTS battles, I recommend looking up an online advice guide to give you tips on battles.

I played this game periodically for a year before I realized that you gained huge bonuses for being uphill. Or that arquebusiers rotated ranks to fire in volleys if you set them up in 4 ranks. Or that heavily armored units tired more quickly in the snow. Or that rainfall lowered morale...etc.

You can better understand the game and enjoy the tactics if you learn some of these hidden tricks first. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Enjoy When you get a handle on the battles, buy the Mongol Invasion expansion and play multiplayer online (and if you got the Warlord's edition you already have this)

Way cool ninja movies. Make sure the movies feature is turned on and try to kill different types of agents - emissaries, priests, daimyos, geishas - and enjoy the video.

ichi

oh, and the Hojo Horde. If you start as a left side faction toward the end of the game expect a whole lotta purple on the right.

I'll second that. The ninja videos are extremely cool and as far as the Hojo horde is concerned that's exactly what's happening in my current campaign as the Mori.

Anyway, welcome aboard Neo. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif I've also only been playing for about a month so I'm rather new as well.

And many thanks to Oleander Ardens. Those links are great.

Why defensive?
Primarily the motive is better ground, as being uphill or behind a wall gives you a tremendous advantage. In final fantasy type combat the players take turns...not so in real life...or Total War

The advantages of being the defender is that you can deploy your troops anway you like instead of being limited to a small number of historical formations and (even more important) you can wait on top of that hill of yours for the attacker to come to you.

Preciselly. A lot of battles on the Middle Ages and Ancient times were organized just like that.

If you start in the east you'll probably have the same problem with groing Shimazu strenght.

If you want a challenge try to:
-eliminate all clans with only ninja's, shinobi and Geisha's
-Try to make the mori-clan a christian clan and christinise entire Japan

Shogun isnt what i would call an RTS in the traditional sense. For a start there is actually some strategy involved in the game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

What can you expect? To lose a fairly large chunk of your life.

Anyway - why are you wasting time asking us? Install it and play it

arghhh Stop calling it an RTS game.

RTS games are ridiculous click-o-thons where it takes the same amount of time to build a cathedral as it does to fight a battle, where every bloody little man has to be told what to do, where cartoon-storylines and mockney characters ham it up for the 12 year old audience.

STW and MTW are wargames.

Sorry - but there IS a difference http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Strategic Map - TBG (Turn Based Game)
Tactical Map - RWT RTS (Real World Tactics Real Time Strategy... ...OK, maybe not Strategy in this part of the game. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-thinking.gif )

Anyhow, it's 2 things:

-A somewhat mix of genres.
-An innovative and different game from any other (outside the TW series).

I dont think that Total War games can be called wargames because even though they are much more complex than average strategy games they still compromise between real-world rules and fictional rules created to balance the game out. There are still a lot of real-world factors that the game forsakes for better gameplay (i certainly would not want the game to be bogged down by hundreds of supply line rules).
