Marcus Cornelius posted this in the Entrance Hall

I think he makes some pretty good points

Quote[/b] ]About newbies, no noobs, jaguars, tapirs, arrogance ..... and so on.

I wanna tell my opinion about no noobs game and matter like that.
It’s only my opinion on a very old querelle.

No noobs sounds at my hears like a sort of discrimination that could have bad impact on people approaching a so difficult game at first time. It is not respectful of a condition that everybody has to front once (and more and more) in life.

I remember my year of military service.
The “veteran” (9 to 12 months of service) people could be divided into two categories:
the “nonni” (transl. grandfathers) those who did abuse their experience and use their status to put themselves up on the man who was not accustomed in the new experience, even only psychologically,
and the others, those who just had to pass by the year in the most honourable and respectful way.
After 9, 10 months of my service my opinion about “nonni” didn’t change: the second categories was the one with better men.

Newbies are the future life of the TW community:
it is silly to have behaviours that can remove them from battlefields.

You can always put a password on game if you wanna play with selected people.

A not very respectful behaviour is when someone host games like “Jaguars against Tapirs” or something like that. All jaguars on one side and all tapirs on the other is of no enjoining and honour for jaguars and it is frustrating for tapirs.

Another one is blaming someone for errors and so on. Better talk and communicate during and after more to learn for every one.

I know that newbies can ruin the game.
But they really ruin the games if one side has more newbies than the other.
Probably in games with “balanced” side of newbies the veteran that best can lead newbies wins. And this is a great challenge for veterans that instead of improving their quickness on keyboard want to improve their leadership and tutorship qualities.
This could be really another type of competition alternative to totally clan wars and competitions:
2 clan m8s and 2 newbies against 2 clan m8s and 2 newbies, ... or 1 veteran and 3 newbies against 1 veteran and 3 newbies, and so on.

In the end more the newbies are the more money Activision will spend for MP part of this wonderful game.

Yes I agree completely, calling your games no noobs makes a really bad impression , and passwording works fine ...

As long as I host an open game anyone is welcome ...

What is really pathetic is the ppl hosting games called no noobs at high arid steppes which is by far the simplest combination .... if theyre so good why dont they attack upphill .... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Another problem is that with the tons of undercover ppl around ya really dont have a chance of balancing a game in advance , as one side might end up with no valour dude and six unit guy , and the other side has 2 undercover pros ...in your 2 noobs and 2 pros teams http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Taking a weaker army will also balance games a lot ....

Agreed with TGI, if you want to play a balanced game, password it.

yesterday I had an other experience. I was hosting a game (4v4 no pass) and on the other side there was a new player.

When the game started one defender (other side) said: n00b alert. As I was in a funny mood :S, I asked how bad is it. He replied "bad". boom, bye bye new player. He quit the battle. Now you can say, well well sulla and other dude, that wasnt very nice. No it wasnt, but to me it was a joke. It's like when I boarded my first ship (merchant marine) your a newbie, so people make jokes about your mistakes, you laugh and learn. We are all human, and sometimes we all make bad remarks, or at least non diplomatic. If your new, you can do 3 things:

Leave the game.
Laugh, say yeah im new, and learn for next game
Pretend your deaf, and play the game your own way.

I would say, 2 seems a fair option. Maybe the new player had really long toe's :D.

I suspect that the attitudes many "veteran" players express toward "noobs" in the multi-player community have a lot to do with why there is typically about 75 players on-line in the foyer (and a "good day" in the game's prime was about 150 - 200 players). Probably a few hundred thousand people own the game worldwide.....

Not saying this is the only reason but I do think it is a significant factor.

It can be hard to balance teams before the game starts, especially when playing with my clan-mates and we want to improve our team skills. But we always welcome new players into our games, try to help them best we can with friendly advice, and they are always welcome back as long as they are polite and want to have fun.

We host a lot of our games with passwords just so that we can get all of our players into the game before it fills up. Then we open it up -- sometimes to all and sometimes to individuals by special invite.

Good points made...

Another thing that makes me mad is when "vets" complain about their team.

Many a time have i hosted a game with some freinds from other clans, and we want to fight together, well a vet comes in and gets pissed and complains about balance and quits. A few times its gotton very heated. People assume that just bc we arent in the same clan we should split up to balance the team. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

I know when i join a game im taking the risk of being with people of lower skill... or people of higher skill, thats just part of the game. You should take what you get and work with it..imo

Actually I often times see 150-200, it just depends on what time and what day you get on. Dont remember the last time I saw less then 100 on euro night (6-9 GMT) So it really just depends.

As for the subject, I feel the same as most of you that saying no noobs or whatnot is not needed, if you happen to have a game where a "noob" joins then if they are willing to listen give them tips, if they seem to not care about anything you say never mind them as they are just shooting themselves in the foot pretty much. I figure let them learn the hard(er) way if they wish to blow off anything you say, and to not waste my time trying to help them.

Right on PJ. There's times when I am the only RW on, and I have good friends in other clans that I enjoy fighting alongside. There are also times when I drop in and am on the 'weak' side - usually a wipeout but I never compain about 'balance'.
