I just have a quick question. Playing as the Spanish, I have recently acquired the ability to train Feudal Knights. I noticed on the units chart that Feudal Foot Knights require the same buildings as the FK’s. However, what I am not certain of, is how to go about getting the foot knights. Any ideas?

[That's a tricky one. You have to build the regular knights, then choose the dismount option for them before a battle.

Some units can't dismount unless the battle is storming a fortification.

You can get feudal foot knights by dismounting feudal knights and early royal knights when attacking or defending a castle. This has to be done when positioning your troops on the battlemap. Right click on the unit or the unit flag and select mount/dismount.
However, Druzhina cavalry can dismount in any battle to become feudal foot knights.

Unless you want to get into modding the game, the only way to have units that show up on the campaign map as feudal foot knights is by bribing catholic rebels or through a loyalist rebellion after you get booted out of a province.

So simply put, I’m stuck with Chivalric MAA as the mainstay of my heavy infantry?

no, i believe Feudal Knights can dismount before any battle, so train Feudal Knights, get into a battle , and dismount them. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

If you use autoresolve then you are 'stuck' with CMAA, altho I would not consider that to be all bad. CMAA and FMAA are hardy little workhorse units that I have found to be very reliable and effective. CMAA should be valor 2 and FMAA valor 3 to get good results.

The CMAA and FMAA come as 60 man units, while FFKs are 40 man, just like their mounted form. I usually use FFKs in campaign to attack a castle or maybe a river bridge, on open fields I want the cav, unless I am very short on infantry in that stack and the enemy is spear heavy.

In MP I sometimes use a V1 FFK unit to either bolster the center or, due to their small size, exploit a gap in the line to get behind the enemy.

You can also build Militia Sargents, at valor 4 and above these guys are good due to their armor-piercing weapon. Vikings are a lot like FMAA, as are Gallowglasses and Clansmen. Pick these guys up as mercs to round out your infantry.

The cool thing about Druzhina Cav is that they dismount into 60 man FFKs.

There are two ways to get Feudal foot knights. One, which everyone has suggested, is to get feudal knights to dismount on the battle field. The second way is a little more complicated, but worth it. Go to your MTW folder in Program Files, and open the crusaders_unit_prod11 file. Scroll down until you find FFK. Scroll to the right until you find a space between CLOSE_TO_SUPPORT_LIMIT(X.X) and something like DEFENDER,SPEAR or ATTACKER,STRONG. In that space, type something like {SPEARMAKER1,SWORDSMITH1} or whatever other buildings you want to make those units. When you play the game, those units will now be buildable http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Make sure to save your changes in the unitprod file. If you have trouble, delete your changes and check the modding section in the Guides forum.
