View Full Version : Medieval - Is it worth it?

I have Shogun and I am considering getting Medieval. Is it worth it, since Rome is coming out this year, and what extras has it got compared to Shogun - extra units, more battle possibilities etc.
Also, something I was hoping to see in Shogun - can you defend from a castle without having to be attacked afte withdrawing. I mean, can I just put troops in a castle and when they attack, they have to attack the castle? (Personally this would probably be my tactic in realy life http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif )

You can now buy MTW and VI for $30 on the web. It's more than worth that amount even with RTW coming out in the fall.
We were dicussing this with a friend today, and probably we will still be playing medieval even after Rome comes out. And the first thing we will do, is to mod Rome into a copy of MTW.
so true.
MTW is so worth it.
we do need a version of MTW running on the Rome engine. that woudl be so awesome *drools*

Yeah... I was thinking about that the other day... it would be cool if they revisited MTW with the Rome graphics engine.

I would definitely recommend it. MTW with VI cost £15, it's almost as good as two games in one, and IMHO they're both better than any other strategy game out there (I'm only guessing about VI, 'cos I haven't played it).
To address your questions, there are about 150 units in MTW alone, and because the range of units differs so widely from faction to faction, each faction will play in a completely different way, so it's incredibly replayable.
I haven't played Shogun in a while, but IIRC the castles work the same way. Enemy attacks, you can either defend, retreat to castle, or abandon the province. You can't force them to attack you in the castle, and you wouldn't really be able to in real life. Though it would be nice if you could taunt them: You Eengleesh Peeg-dogs. We'll have to wait until Rome for that. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Have fun if you decide to get it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

Ditto http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif
Medieval + VI is worth every florin you would invest in.
_
Your strategy in real life might be to defend in castles. However, your real life opponents would probably adopt the strategy of starving you out rather than assaulting, if your position is strong. Your AI opponents usually do the same, but occasionally, on rare magic moments, they will assault your castle. Yeehaw
If you really want to defend castles you can do so in custom battles.
If you're even slightly interested in strategy and battlefield tactics, and if you don't think Pokemon is the best thing since sliced bread, then yes, Medieval Total War with the Viking Invasion expansion is the one game that rules them all.
Buy it now it's the best game in the world http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Lol, asking whether or not to buy MTW on a MTW forum... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Of course everybody wants to be the first to yell yes Buy it now
Do I still need to add my advice? (probably not, but, well, who cares?)
Go and buy MTW (preferable with the Viking expansion) right now You won't regret it.
*and now back to play MTW* http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ht_knight.gif

Check out the amazon uk page here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000NSZMW/ref=sr_aps_videogames_1_1/026-9587201-1140441).
Of course, that's if you're in the UK, and you'll still have to pay some P&P. Also, I saw it in Game recently as part of buy 2 games for £30 (with MTW BC counting as one), I think it's £20 or £25 alone.

Yeah, I'm in the UK (down in dorset). That amazon price is great, I'll have to be purchasing that when I next get paid. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Many thanks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif

Is it only me or does anyone else have mixed feelings about RTW in terms of MTW? While I can't wait to play RTW with the new engine and all, part of me will be sad because MTW will never feel the same again after experiencing all the new stuff. I really wish there they'd redo MTW later with the new engine.
Sometimes I get the feeling too that MTW was sort of a filler title before the REAL new game (RTW) got released, as MTW could've been made so much better with more controlability in battles and better information management in the campaign map.
Anyway, I don't begrudge MTW for a second and think everyone would should play it. It even instilled in me a love of history, which is something I didn't really care for pre-MTW. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif

I think Medieval will be outdated when Rome
hits the shelves http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
But someone will make a M:TW mod for Rome,
it's inevitable ain't it?
Come on we have Rome mods for M:TW what is there to
stop the vice versa?
so I cant wait for Rome , of course but it is also the oppurtunities from then on which has me excited the most
because imagine ME:TW for Rome? or Wheel of Time?
