Would have loved to make that a poll but can t yet - in my current game (Turks hard) I hold Cordoba well teched up (thanks to the late Spanish http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif ) and have Bulgaria in reach but it is underteched - so now the "burning question" - get Bulgaria for +1 valor or invest into weapon upgrades +Academy in Cordoba? - not enough time for either before 1230 but I thought marching back east with gold JHI to retake Syria might be interesting (in case my fortress in Anatolia doesn t hold http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif ) - so your thoughts guys - valor or weapon?

I always go for valor, first. Of course the JHI would be awesome with the weapons upgrade but for my playing style, they don't really need it.

I started a game as Turks about 2 weeks ago. I am working on Nicea, Constantinople (already done), Greece and Bulgaria for JHI. Have Constantinople producing JHI since approximately 1170. It's now 1250 and I have approximately at least 40-50 JHI units active duty. Hm well maybe 30 in all considering combat losses etc.. Every offensive army has 4 JHI in it and there is absolutely nothing that can stand in the way of those armies. I still play a mostly cavalry style but the 4 JHI are very very good for anti cavaly and also general shock troops. What's more it helps a lot that I now have five 7 star generals and one 8 star prince plus of course the 7 star Sultan. The generals boost the JHI starting valor to about 4-6 valor...unstoppable

Looking forward to the Bulgarian JHI which are due to start arriving soon.

JHI in 1170? Congratulations on being a masterful player, but it sounds unfair as far as gameplay. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-zzz.gif
I think I would rather play Aragon or Novgorod for more of a challenge.

how did you get them in early?

modding?

they are only high and late.

I would always go for valor too as they can be retrained for weapons/armor later.

make the grand mosques nonunique and build JHI in bulgaria and retrain in cordoba.

BTW, how did you get metalsmith in cordoba?

there's no iron there.

It's not that hard...unfair ? It's the normal route...Rum ---> Trabzon ---> Constantinople. I'll upload my save game so you can see it, perfectly fair. I don't think its unfair. I'm playing extremely slow and steady and I just want to build, up my empire with good troops and excellent infrastructure.

Just checked my list of battles and the Turks took Constantinople 1113. That's no early acquisition. It can be done much faster but I prefer to play slowly and love doing everything beautifully and perfectly.

It takes about 112 years to build the infrastructure necessary for JHI. That means if you start building from scratch in 1084 then you will complete the building by 1199. In my case Constantinople already had most of the stuff there already, which it does because it starts higher up the tech tree, plus the barney builds it up while he has it.

I estimate that it took about 70-80 years to get Constantinople up and ready, which places us in approximately 1193. So I apologise but I think my initial estimate of 1170 is short by 20 years.

So I was ready to build em by 1193, approximately. Thanks for that reminder Katank I was getting carried away all excited about declaring my new Turk game's progress. Of course the JHI only come active in High.

Building JHI is fun, it's one of the best units for the Turks. Not building JHI would be like playing Aragon and not building Lancers.

hmm, as correctly noted by Katan, JHI are available only in HIGH and LATE unless you have modded your game: i.e., you wouldn't be able to build them in 1193 even if you had all the infrastructure in place. JHI become available in 1205.

ahhh, so true.

or not building longbows as the brits or italian inf as italians.

I just remember in a few of my campaigns how I waited several excruciating years to get JHI as I too finished the reqs before High rolled around. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

thanks for the answers guys - and I know I cant build them in early but the buildings required take a lot of time - I ended up building them in Castile as I could get them there earlier and I would not loose my last ally and trading partner http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

@katank - meant Castile in my first post sorry
