As opposed to killing the pope, this game I'm trying to avoid excomms.

1) Is there a way (in the game) to tell precisely when you can attack somebody again, that the pope told you to leave alone? If not,

2) I've been writing down the year he warns me. Precisely how many years later can I attack the same dudes again? Say it's 1200 when I get warned. Attack on 1212?

I think it's beats to attack in 1213 to be on the safe side. While your excomm is 'pending' you can't attack another small cristian faction either so you aslo have to wait 12 years for that

Maybe I am wrong Garion but earlier threads gave me the impression you could only be warned off 1 faction at a time. Thus you feint attack a faction to get the warning and then attack the faction you really want as you will not get warned until the 1st warning has ended.

I avoid excommunications like the plague.

One time during an early English campaign I thought I'd be smart and wipe out France and a bit of the HRE, recieving a excommunication in the process. Seeing that it was only near the beginning of the campaign, I thought by the time anyone is capable of launching a crusade against me I should be back in the good books again.

Needless to say I was wrong and got dual crusades from both the rotten Germans and Spaniards. It ended up a pretty short campaign for the ole English. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-oops.gif

maybe, YAKUBU, were both right. If you attack someone in the 2-year period in which you're allowed to attack someone yo won't get excommd (I don't know, but haven't tried) But I always get excommd if I attack someone say 8 years after the papal warning

If you've gotten a warning, and that warning hasn't expired yet, you can attack any other Catholic faction without fear of excommunication. The only caveat being that if your King or the Pope dies, the warning is off, which means you'll get warned for the new war.

Otherwise, the feint attack works quite well.

I find Excomm a bit randon the last game I played as the Spainish me and the Argonese where at war with the French for well over one hundred years and neither of us got eccomunicated then the sneaky Args attack me totally unprovoked I'd like to add so I retaliate and get the warning to withdraw my troops http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif its just not fair I tell you . Has any body played a modded game as the POPE do you excommunicate yourself for attacking fellow catholic nations?

@Lord Dazed and Confused

Are you sure the French hadn't already been ex-communicated?

This would explain why the pope didn't warn you off killing them.

yeah I'm pretty sure because they kept sending crusades all over the shop every four years to places like Kazhar & Muscovy I suppose thinking about it its a bit strange as the French normally spend most of any campaign excommunicated http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You'll only get a warning from the Pope if you're more than twice as big as the faction that you're attacking, so I'm guessing that you were less than twice as big as France, but more than twice as big as Aragon, hence the warning.
Seems a little odd though. Presumably the French were twice as big as Aragon, so I don't know how they avoided excommunication.

Personally, I'd like to try playing as the Pope. Excommunications can be such a hastle. Even when they do work in your favor, ie. one AI faction attacks a smaller AI faction and gets excommunicated, that faction is usually strong enough that they invade & put their own pope in. Bleah :) The other thing I don't like about that damn pope is he's sneaky I'm in the midst of a Spanish game (I figured it was time try them) and the Pope picks a fight with Italy, who take Rome to retaliate. Well, the pope calls all us good boys to come out and slap the Italians around. So I do, I take Rome, and immediately vacate it, to give it back to the Pope, and I take Genoa. That bastard invades Genoa on the next turn And I can't attack him to slow him down. Just not fair I tell ya... I think I'm gonna mod a game and start my own reformation. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif

Conquer the pope and keep a big army in italy. you get your own little puppet pope and can't be excummnicated http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

or you let a new pope return and if he tries to excomm you destroy his lands and retreat, that's much cheaper in the end

umm, better to just abandon it.

I managed to keep it at 200 loyalty and he still returned

if you really want to fight him, keep only enough peasants in there to maintain loyalty and have many elite in say Naples.

when he appears, he appears with smaller force and you can easily trash him.

jep, that's what I was trying to say

whatever you do, don't keep a 10000 man army in rome, because he'll hit you back with a 20000 men army in order to come back

Yes but thats what makes it fun.

Especially when you can get 20000 men garisonning the province with another 40000 in naples.

The result a 100 000 man battle.

oh blah, i get excommunicated all the freakin time if i am using some catholic faction, too much of a warring nature i spose, i mean eliminating the competition is how to win right, the religion stuff of it kinda just is an annoying spur...
i always figure the pope can do my laundry if he so dares...screw him...
but oh well, crazy stuff...

by the way how does one 'garrisson' 20,000 troops, misleading...
is it rather just simply having that many in the country...
but anyway nothing wrong with a 100,000 man battle, the more the merrier they say, isnt it???

Playing as the English the other day (Expert, v1.0, High)
I got the Spanish launching a crusade against me without me being excommed().
I didn't think the Papa would allow that - it must have cost a fortune in bribes.

Now barely holding vs. Spanish, Italians, Germans with French reappearing *grins*
