Okay, I read that relieving an ally from a siege raises your influence. How? If the ally is holed up in his castle, and I invade to drive off the invading army, when the invader is destroyed, I immediately become the invader, right? My ally is in the castle and I've siezed his lands. Is there a timing thing to this that I'm doing wrong? All well intentioned advice welcomed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
The only way I can see to do this is as follows (I usually do this for the Pope). 1) Let the invader bring down the castle. 2) Invade that province and destroy whomever took control. 3) Remove all troops from the province. I don't think that does anything to make your allies happy though, I don't think they appreciate it, as they still almost always have a rebel army to go through.

Once your allie retreats into the castle the province is technically in the hand of the ones besieging them now. So you can invade and relieve the siege to get the extra influence. But only do it actual allies, neutral people will just as soon attack you as the enemy.
When you relieve the siege of an ally your troops immediatley vacate the land handing it back to them and this keeps the alliance valid.
Works funnier in Shogun. I was the Usegi clan and wanted the Oda clan as a buffer. So the Mori clan would attack Oda and besiege him I'd turn around and chase Mori out. the next turn I'd withdraw from the territory but the Oda forces would still take losses for being besieged even though I was his ally and the alliance was still valid even though he was besieged by me for a season. This went on for a while unitl Mori had weakened oda so bad he had no more troops left but bought me some time to have troops there to defend against Mori
yeah the alliances in shogun didn't wotk very well. If an ally helped me in battle then, in 95% of the time, the ally would attack me in the next two turns
Just to point out that this only works if you are ALLIED, not only if you are both at war with the same enemy. In ther latter case, you merely take possession as the new occupier.

what do you say about this then:
I was Uesugi and was besieged in Totomi for one turn; my troops from Shinano attacked, won, and when the battle ended, my garrison was still there, losing troops by being under siege. I had to merge the two armies in order to get rid of that frustrating bug.
wow, Luckiliy you saw it in time, you could use entire armies that way.
the allied garrison also usually sallies and helps you out but the bug is that if you used a seaborne relieve, your troops are captured when you turn back control to the allies when you win.
thus, you have to ransom your troops in that case regardless of whether you win or lose unless you break alliance in midbattle.
yeah, I saw another post about that 2 weeks ago, about a guy who got gigantic ransoms because an ally form oversees helped him releieve a siege
The CPU will hgelp relieve a siege? Never seen that, it's always me who has to get them off the hook. I hear that in Rome you can actually ask for help and be approached for it. Should be good.
I've had CPU relive sieges a few times.
I was Italians or something and bribed kiev but couldn't maintain loyalty in kiev.
turn after turn of massed rebellions caused my forces to be finally defeated and trapped in a castle.
my allies the Poles came and relieved the siege and saved my outpost.
I had a bit of a soft spot for them and only wiped them out at the end. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
NOWAKE in Shogun you have to take your troops out of the castle in order to end the siege, just a small glitch in the game. I noticed this when I was under siege and the A.I. vacated. Next turn they took losses and realized you have to reclaim the territory manually. All you had to do was take your guys out and the siege is over
oaty I know. The funny thing is that my troops from Shinano and those besieged in Totomi both took part in the relieving battle. When the battle was over, my men from Totomi were still in the castle, under siege by my troops. Of course, I remedied that immediatly, but I lost some 20-30 men in the process http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif I didn't had a great many heas to spare http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif
that sux, but on the other hand, this is my 100 post as a junior member, so let's get this party started
