There are only four fully playable religions-cultures: Pagan, Catholic, Muslim, Orthodox. You can change their names, but you can't make new ones.

Religions and culture are different, culture basically tells the game what type of picture to use for the building. Religion can be set to either Christian, Orthodox, Pagan, Muslim or Jewish AFAIK and does not have to match the culture(you can have a faction with a religion of Christian but can set the culture to Muslim and build Mid-Eastern buildings).

I am not sure if you can change cultures or the actual names of the religions though.

If you wanted a new religion, you could go into one of the Loc/Eng folders and change the translation of the REL_Christian to something else, that would give you 5 different "religions" to play with. There is an old mod that successfully changed religions but I can't remember what it was.

Hi, I just wanted to note that there is actually a fifth culture which you can use under the label of “Christian.” This culture label is distinct from that of Orthodox or Catholic and if you look in the pieces folder you will see it defined rather then Catholic, etc. You can set a faction to this culture label in startpos and crusaderprod and they will be distinct using different portraits, building icons, etc. (but you first have to create all of these). I did this in the MTW campaign setting the rebels in Norway and Sweden as “Christian” and created new pieces folders for Catholic and Orthodox, so that when there is a rebellion in these countries the portraits and the army pieces could be Viking rather then the MTW campaign set. (The only problem to note is that there is a problem with the faction leader pieces and one would need to work around this with the default pieces...) There are a lot of “loc” files that would need to be set, and it is tedious, but I thought this might help in some way.
Thanks. Lysander.

Lysander,
Is it perhaps possible that you come around abit more here in the Dungeon? I believe that it was you who descended from heaven to solve the problem of faction shields for new factions when VI was just released. All your posts seem to be highly informative, so stick around but not as sticky as this post is seeming to get....

Any way, welcome back http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

Cheers, Duke John
