View Full Version : Inheriting Egyptian troops/lands without marriage

Playing as the Spanish on Early/Hard, I had conquered Egypt and defeated the Egyptian faction. But some years later, the Egyptians reappeared in a massive rebellion and took back some of my lands. I went to bribe some of their armies, and sent in the assassins big time and killed their Sultan - whereupon the rest of his army turned Spanish and I got the lands back. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif

I know the emissaries never got to offer their bribes, because they were still 0-star afterwards. And I didn't marry into the Egyptian family so I couldn't have inherited their lands that way.

Has this happened to anyone else? Can anyone think of a reason why the troops should have become yellow rather than gray, i.e. why they should have become Spanish rather than just rebels?

I'm not complaining - it was a nice surprise, and I got about a dozen 5-acumen leaders to boost my income too, plus lots of camels, naphtha and desert archers. But I wonder why this happened.

I think something similar happened to me - but I dont' remember bribing them, but maybe their leader died while they were holed up in Scotland. There were only like 500 men in Scotland that I was not bothering but wasn't allowing an easy escape either. Suddenly one turn I realized that I owned Scotland again, I had the units as well - not a man lost. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif

Just holding a prov one turn gives you a tiny chance that rebels there may decide to join you. The longer you hold a prov, the greater the chance.

This is true and is most likely the explanation. Sometimes rebels just decide to join your faction. Simple as that.

Thank you motorhead, that seems likely.

Perhaps they just liked the cut of my jib. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

how were you doing though?

usually the only reason they join you is that you are doing really badly and the engine feels sorry for you. same as papal donations I think.

must manage economy like a drunkard and generally stink so to get free troops and free cash http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

LOL katank, but I was doing very well thank you I owned half the world and had a massive trade surplus with about 600,000 florins by then I think.

wow, really? that's a first.

I've only seen free troops as Polish and the economy was down the drain. (note to self: don't play polish when a newb).

I've never got free troops, but I did get free money from the Pope despite having the best economy (as the Hungarians). Its cos I'm so pious http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

As Byz I got free troops once from the Spanish, I had just relieved a seige on their fortress in Valencia, and had to pay a ransom to get my troops back, then next turn Valencia turns purple along with all the spanish troops (still had spanish loyalty showing too). Their king hadn't died, so I was very confused.

really? spanish loyalty shields but now byz allegiance? that's pretty cool.

I'll relieve more sieges if that means I might get the troops for free
