I know this should rather be posted in the Throne room, but I post it here to give new members the opportunity to react on this too (I assume you can only post/reply in the throne room when you're a senior patron, right?)

I regularly check the topics in the throne room, and I really love the idea of PBEM gameplay (play by email). I suppose everyone knows how a PBEM game works.

Well I find it a pity that not all reigns are finished. I'd like to step in to some games, but I am most unsure about my own MTW capacities (I only purchased the game last January and I don't play MTW so awfully much that I already beat up the AI with such an ease, that I'm getting bored of the game and desperately looking for a way to tech up the AI to get a challenge). This means that I've only contributed to one PBEM so far, even though I'd like to play more PBEM games.

I think PBEM games add some flavour to MTW in general as you continue a game started by somebody else, thus you don't know exactly what kind of game you're getting.
Plus, there's (mostly) a nice write-up in the end. (The high level of most of the write-ups are also a bit of an extra obstacle to join a PBEM; sorry Simon Appleton and The_Emperor, your write-ups are just *too* good http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif)

(And now I'm coming to the point) I'd like to ask you if you (senior and new patrons) would be interested to kick off some PBEM games, on Hard level if possible. I don't think it should matter that a faction already had its own PBEM or not.

What do you think?
Is anyone interested?
Or am I talking to the walls right now? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-grin2.gif

I would be interested, if it wasn't for the fact that I haven't got enough time the coming period. But if the offer is still open at the start of Juli, I would be happy to join.

I think the offer will be still open in July. Even if some new PBEM kicked off by then, I'll be most happy to start another one. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-grin.gif

I got the game a few months ago and fiddled with it but never really got into it until two weeks ago. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-blush.gif

How about Hard English, from Early.

I don't mind kicking it off. Let me know if you're interested.

Yay

Count me in.

I haven't played the English yet, so it's something new for me too.

yes, Lord Armbandit, you can kick it off, thanks.
Will you add a write-up too? And don't forget to make screenshots http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wink.gif

What version?

Tricky Lady
05-28-2004, 21:59
MTW / VI 2.01

But I have no problem downgrading the MTW installation if enough players would request this...

(on second thought, I'd rather not downgrade to MTW 1.1, because of some small missing features such as the pre-battle screen)

Oooh Trick Lady can you have a look at the Kindom of Aragon thread and maybe carry it on? I've kinda left it at the beginning of a war with Egypt which is the second biggest kijngdom.

Tricky Lady

I had already secretly downloaded it to give it a try, but I gave up as there was something wrong with the province sheet... Very strange. All the tax levels were on 'high' by default, which, logically, caused the loyalty level in new-conquered provinces to drop way down... The problem was that I couldn't change the tax level as the up/down arrows had disappeared http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-huh.gif

Which version was the Aragon campaign started in?
I suppose it has to be played in a lower version then (I loaded it in MTW/VI 2.01).

Welcome to PBEMing guys.

An English campaign is a great idea I think. The original English PBEM Campaign passed away a fair while ago.

(back before I started joining in on PBEM Games, and before the Throne Room was made & all the Campaigns were mixed up here in the Entrance Hall)

So to replay a new English campaign I feel would work very well given the length of time that has passed.

On the subject of write-ups, don't worry too much about them, just tell the events of your reign how you want to tell them...

After all the goal is for each player to place their stamp on the Campaign's history. It doesn't matter if its a long story or a short summary. All are equally valued and deserving of recognition.

Should you need any help organising the game I'd be happy to help out. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Was it set to Auto-Tax on the menu options? (click on the grey arrow beside the Minimap and see if the auto-tax box is checked)

that causes the Ai to take control of Tax management... and it sometimes messes it up. The other thing to watch out for is the location of the Monarch, if he gets cut off from his distant lands by a blockaded fleet or a demolished port, your going to be in a world of rebellion.

I'm gonna check it rightaway.

yes, it was. The AI even set it to Very high everywhere. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-grin2.gif
I disabled the autotax and now it works fine.

I'll see if I can make anything of it. I'll post something next week.

Great idea Tricky Lady. This gives the newer patrons a taste of PBEM they might not get if they don't bother checking out the Throne Room.

Okay, I'm going to kick off the campaign tonight. will need help or e-mail addresses to pass it on. And I need to know how to stick the screenshots up http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-help.gif

Just a suggestion - how about everyone writes up a 'mission statement' when they take over of what they intend to acheive? These should be a bit ambitious, and it will add flavour to the write-up at the end. Also, the 'take-over' post should give a bit of a review of the predecessor's performance, e.g.

King Stephen was a mighty king who grew the lands under his dominion through fire and sword, brought trade to the merchants and craftsmen of his Kingdom, and died with no less than 4 valiant heirs to follow his example

And what would the preferred ending write-up style be? i.e., historical text, e.g. -

King William then sought to secure his northern borders from the rebellious Scots. He sent emissaries to their King and attempted with offers of coin to earn his allegiance. When this failed, his mighty armies descended upon the castle of Edinburgh and laid siege, eventually eradicating the flower of scottish nobility

Or, in a fictional novel style -

King William was brooding upon 'the Scottish problem'. His emissary, Roger de Mourtrai, had returned to Wessex with a curt message from the Scotsmen.

It had read 'We shall never be the lapdogs you seek to make us. Be grateful your emissary retains the use of his head'

William had initially been infuriated. The Scots could not hope to stand against him in the field, and their Kingdom was poor and insignificant when compared to the powers now active across Europe. He had felt that making Scotland a vassal Kingdom would allow them to share in England's glory. Now they threw this honour back to him as if they did not need his help.

Now he was coldly considering the potential casualties in a massed invasion......

Please give me your thoughts people.

My 'Mission statement':

I do hereby pledge to build a mighty nation for my descendants to rule, to crush the French, purge the infidel moors from the Catholic lands of Europe, and quell the rebellious celts of Wales and Scotland.

By the way everyone: I'm not creating 'rules' - if you don't like these suggestions, you of course do not have to follow them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

I'd join in, but I've played above easy about twice and became frustrated both times. I think I should develop my skills more, maybe if there's another game in a couple months I'll be ready.

Ok now this I can help you with.

A little while ago our beloved admins at the Org created an uploader for PBEM games, and another one for images.

People tend to transfer games this way, and it also makes it avaliable to anyone who wants to try their hand at it without the added complication of email addresses.

The PBEM Uploader thread in The Throne Room (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=25;t=13732)

Org Image Uploader Thread in the Mead Hall (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=24;t=10398)

That should be enough to sort you out with those issues.

I would also sugguest that you all check in on the Throne Room forum as all Junior Patrons can post there as I understand it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I'll open a thread for this England PBM in the Throne Room.

Grrreat

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smiley.gif

EDIT: I have started a new topic in the Throne Room. Everyone who wants to join this PBM Campaign can sign up there. If there are enough players who want to join, I will remove my name from the list. Click here (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=25;t=18859;r=1;&#top) to go to the Throne Room link.

If enough players are interested in a PBM game on normal (it was my original intent to start a Normal PBM game), please sign up, post your preferences, suggestions for factions or rules, and we can probably start a new PBM game...

Ah, so this is where I can post...

Well anyway, I am interested in this sort of Idea, but to tell the truth, I have no idea how one would participate in said game. Perhaps someone could direct me to a thread with instructions of some sort, or just explain it to me.

As some people seem to be unsure what PBMing is, I'll post a link to a stickie in the Throne Room: How does one PBM? (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=25;t=16234)

Read this, get inspired, and sign up for one of the fine PBM threads in the Throne Room.

The PBM threads want YOU http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ht_knight.gif
