started playing 2 days ago without the benefit of a tech tree guide and stuff that comes from buying original =P

been playing the english and have conquered all the way till toulouse and extended my right borders till i am touching the danes and italians.

pretty good at managing the europe map but poor at battle-time. most cash-rich in the game with trade routes almost all over the map.

was just wondering some things:

1.how do i build better ships than caravels?

2.are armourers only buildable in iron-rich provinces ala shogun?

3.sea battles: do we fight them out or are they auto-calc?

4.wats early, high era? i think i started in early so when does high start? ok i am a bloody newb..

5.wat units are good for the english?? i got many royal knights, been producing longbow, billmen, gallowglasses, clansmen and chivalric men-at-arms. trying to get feudal and chivalric knights =). Are those gallowglasses and clansmen good late-game?

6.why is it when i pound my expensive as hell chivalric men-at-arms at feudal sergeants, i lose?? thats when i got 2 units attacking them and my general is same level as AI's. clearly the fighting is not as easy to understand as shogun's hehe

7. how to stop assassins?

a big thank-you to anyone who bothers to answer.. =)
could not find a comprehensive website that could guide me thru the game like shogun did.. had to rely on FAQs and stuff on this forum =D

Welcome to the Org bear

Quote[/b] ]1.how do i build better ships than caravels?

Build up Wessex, Cogs built there get a valor bonus. You will need a Fortress, Master Foundry, Master Shipbuilder, and wait until gunpowder is discovered (which is usually before I get the infrastructure built)

Quote[/b] ]2.are armourers only buildable in iron-rich provinces ala shogun? No, any province can bild up their armorers. It is the Metalsmiths that are available in the iron-rich provinces, they give + to attack bonus. Some good ones in Spain.

Quote[/b] ]3.sea battles: do we fight them out or are they auto-calc? Autocalc. The slowest ship sets the speed for the fleet it is in. There is a chance of catching the enemy fleet that is based on the speed of each. Once you catch a fleet, the comp autocalcs based on att/def values, command rating of admirals, and number of ships.

Quote[/b] ]4.wats early, high era? i think i started in early so when does high start? ok i am a bloody newb.. I think its 1205 when High Era beigns, but not sure. The type of Royal Knights you can produce changes, that's how I know it has happened.

Quote[/b] ]5.wat units are good for the english?? i got many royal knights, been producing longbow, billmen, gallowglasses, clansmen and chivalric men-at-arms. trying to get feudal and chivalric knights =). Are those gallowglasses and clansmen good late-game?

LBs, Bills are the prime ones. CMAA and Chiv Knights are the mainstay of my army. Build a Chapter House and start a Crusade - choose a target that is easy to get to and win, after the Crusade is successful you get some interesting units.

Gallows and Clansmen are good in the desert - don't build an armorer in Scotland or Ireland and you will have good desert troops.

Quote[/b] ]6.why is it when i pound my expensive as hell chivalric men-at-arms at feudal sergeants, i lose?? thats when i got 2 units attacking them and my general is same level as AI's. clearly the fighting is not as easy to understand as shogun's hehe

This game is all about morale. Hit the Feudal Sargs in the front with one unit, then flank with the other. Add archer/LB fire and a cav charge. Being flanked, being tired, being outnumbered, taking arrow fire all reduce morale.

Quote[/b] ]7. how to stop assassins? Build border forts and produce spies.

1.how do i build better ships than caravels?

The tech tree for ships is pretty simple. Build better shipwrights and then upgrade your castle to build better shipwrights. Some structures and ships are specific to time periods and discoveries. Time periods are Early (1087-1204) High (1205-1314) and Late (1315-1453). THe discoveries that relate to boats are the compass and gunpowder.

2.are armourers only buildable in iron-rich provinces ala shogun?

No. Armourers can be built anywhere. Metalsmiths can only be built in iron-rich provinces. Armourers upgrade defense and Metalsmiths upgrade weapons

3.sea battles: do we fight them out or are they auto-calc?

All sea battles are autocalculated. There's more to sea battles though including tricks on how to win.

4.wats early, high era? i think i started in early so when does high start? ok i am a bloody newb..

Answered above. The various periods are significant in that certain troops and building only become available during the High or Late periods. Also, certain units can no longer be made after the Early or High era ends.

5.wat units are good for the english?? i got many royal knights, been producing longbow, billmen, gallowglasses, clansmen and chivalric men-at-arms. trying to get feudal and chivalric knights =). Are those gallowglasses and clansmen good late-game?

You seem to be doing fine here. I don't know about everyone else, but I like to use clansmen to chase down archer units. Ideally, you use cavalry for this but a clansman moves faster than most archers and so makes an acceptable choice.

6.why is it when i pound my expensive as hell chivalric men-at-arms at feudal sergeants, i lose?? thats when i got 2 units attacking them and my general is same level as AI's. clearly the fighting is not as easy to understand as shogun's hehe

Alot of that has to do with positioning and valour. Troops with high valour can cream low valour troops. Also, if they were uphill and you were downhill, that makes a difference.

7. How do I stop assasins?

Build border forts. That should solve most of your problems. For more protection, place your own spies and assasins in provinces with ports. They help out as well.

its worth noting you achieve absolutley nothing from the discovery of the compass, it amkes you think that you can build better ships but you cant, you have to wait till the invention fgunpowder so you can build a foundry

Wow I totally missed that.

It seems unreasonable to me for a person to not pay a few dollars and buy an original, legitimate copy.

Currently the game is pretty inexpensive, and well worth the cost.

Hi bearbear. Don't know what your problem was with replying to this topic - unless it has to do with that non-original version of the game and the guilt that goes with it. I merged your thanks topic with this one.

If your catholic yes there is no difference when this happens but if your muslim I think its the dows that are no longer restricted to the coastline as soon as you get the compass event

@ oaty, are you sure that dhows are no longer restricted to the coast?

isn't the deep sea ability built into hte ships in the units file?

besides, you should already have baggalas which are deep sea and they are superior

KATANK all I can remember when playing as the Almohods I had ships in a deep sea region before 1205

katank

these would be baggalas which are deap sea and available in dockyards.

this can be built before compass event.

hence, that event is pretty useless.

Does the Compass Rose event allow you to move into the Atlantic region? I know baggalas can run into East/West Med before the event, but I seem to remember I couldn't run anything into the Atlantic until the Compass Rose (this was playing as the Eggy's recently). I may be misremembering, though ('twouldn't be the first time http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ).

Well, nobody said Bearbear has an illicit copy. He may have purchased it resale from somebody who no longer wanted it. While I think that's crazy, hey, maybe some people don't like playing the game.

This raises a point that came up at a Memorial Day party the other night... do you have the right to sell games/CD's/movies that you've purchased but think suck and you don't want anymore? I heard that Garth Brooks (I believe it was him, not sure) won't allow his records to be sold at any store that allows resale of old CD's. I think that really sucks, because that's one of the main advantages independent record stores have over huge 'it's popular because we said it was, no we don't have John Lee Hooker, who is that' type chains (think Goody's). Personally, I'm a bit sick and tired of multi-millionaires going around speaking out about how they're a friend of the common man, and then turn around and screw said common man every chance they get.
