"Dutch" from CA posted this regarding sapping;
Quote[/b] ]Sort of; the sapping tunnel is built on the campaign map, like the other pieces of siege equipment. Then when you get onto the battlefield you choose where to place it.
Unlike other siege engines, once it's placed you cannot move a sapping tunnel, and you still have to "fire" the tunnel in order to use it - which means sending a bunch of men into the tunnel and waiting a while until they've set it on fire.
Once placed, the tunnel is vulnerable to attack by enemy troops, and if it is destroyed the men inside die. This is the only defence against a sapping attack -- at the end when the tunnel is fired the wall section the sapping attack was aimed at comes crashing down.
Hopefully that clears up any uncertainty

Sounds interesting but I am really having a problem trying to visualize how this is going to work.

I was always wondering what sapping was. Thx for the news.

I imagine it requires a semitransparent look at the place of the sapping or a button to make them visible. It has to be visible to defenders somehow, though. Otherwise they wouldn't know where to counteract the sapping.
I hope it doesn't look too weird. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif

I think it will be invisble till you send your men in. Then it will become visible.Much like the ninjas in STW, visible when attacking.

I would have thought it would have been hidden unless someone had a unit near the target point for the Sapping tunnel...
Probably kind of like how units were able to hide in the woods in MTW, once a unit got close enough they were revealed.

This leads me to ask whether counter tunnels can be dug? Try to collapse the sap itself as it is trying to collapse the wall, or just break in and viciously hack people apart...
The sapping could be done like it is in Stronghold or something I suppose - the entrance appears when the tunnel is started, and if that's destroyed, the sap fails.
Yeah, I'd expect it to be a case of attacking the entrance too.
But I'd hoped counter sapping would be in order http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
Actually I just thought they would mean that sapping = the ability to build/use siege engines...

Sapping means that men dig a tunnel under ground toward a section of a castle or wall, then burn the wooden foundation, once that's gone, the wall will collapse, and yo there's an opening. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

Its also been referred to as "Undermining" as well... For obvious reasons.
