OK, I've checked the FAQs and guides and can't seem to find the answer to this. I know you're automatically excomm'd if you attack His Holiness. Then, if you eliminate the Papal faction, you're no longer excomm'd.

Then what about when the Pope re-emerges? Are you excomm'd again as soon as he shows up? Is it possible to let him have Papal States when he comes back and contain him there with large armies in the surrounding provinces, and thus reach a ceasefire and have the excomm lifted?

thanks

When the Pope reemerges, stay out of his way and you will not be excommed or at war with him.

I usually save the Pope for last, but when I take the Papal States earlier in a game I usually leave immediately, but if it is you that owns the Papal States then when he reemerges you will be at war if you stay and fight - abandon the provinces and you should be OK.

That's exactly what I do.

Assassination is a better tool for dealing with His Pointy-Hattedness

if you wanna ruin the pope, eliminate him, then destory all bulidings in the papal states and rome, when he comes back eh will be unable to support his armies, or build and will just eb stuck doing nothing (provided you stop him invading the neighbouring italian provinces
