View Full Version : Not Now!
So I'm playing my first real MTW game still (after 4 days, still going), and while the loyalty thing is a right pain in the buttocks, not unmanageable.
Anyway, the year is 1231 and I'm literally 2 islands from declaring total victory, when guess who shows up? Yep, the Golden Horde. I had no idea that was in the game Talk about a complete surprise and a major kick in the nuts ;)
But that's not why I'm posting. The bulk of my forces were in/around Venice when the Horde hit and needless to say, the invaded provinces didn't last long, but I've finally got my main army of about 20k units over to the Horde, but when I hit end turn, the game locks GAH Just when I'm about to get some payback, the game locks on me If I didn't know better, I'd SWEAR the game is doing it purposely to keep me from winning ;)
Seriously though, any suggestions? Is this a known problem of some kind and is there some way to get around it? I'd hate to have to go back to a previous save after all that.

not sure what you mean by locks
but i've often encountered a bug that would immediately shutdown Total War (crash to desktop) in the middle of a turn. often this would happen after i've just won 3 or 4 battles - and it happens BEFORE i've been given the chance to SAVE the game after those battles. as soon as i click on a particular pane that pops-up immediately after battle, the game would always crash to desktop
if i rebooted my computer and did the same thing, the error would still occur
the only way that *I* have found to get around this bug was to reload the saved game and this time, do something different during the turn
needless to say this bug has aggravated me on MANY occasions and CA really needs to patch that BS
note sure if this is the same prob as you're having or not but if not then now you have more aggravation to look forward to when the problem i've described happens to you in addition to your current problem
By 'locks', I mean the game completely freezes and the taskmanager indicates it's stopped responding. I also tried doing the turn differently, but the problem still occurs. It hasn't CTD though (at least not yet).
It seems to lock as soon as it gets to the 'Thinking...' stage, right after I confirm past the not having enough money to continue building dialogue (first thing that happens). Is there an errorlog somewhere that I can look at? The only one I found was in the root dir that mentioned something about not being able to find files, but that was from 6 hours ago according to the timestamp of the events.
Thanks anyway Navaros.

um ceasar, that is more related to winning against the Horde as opposed to a problem with the game itself.
@Zapaan, i will copy&paste this to the apothecary
I've also experienced this and since I quicksaved during the start of a battle, I couldn't do anything different and my campaign was set back about 5 years since after a particular battle, the game would crash regardless of anything.
CA should really fix this.
I even tried not fighting that battle but it still crashed when I tried to save. GAH http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif
Thanks Octavian.
Also, just so it's clear, I'm not entering the combat interface (in fact, I don't even get a chance to when the lock occurs), I'm waiting for the turn to finish in campaign mode when the lock occurs.

Are you hitting on me?
Because I'll have you know, I'm easy -erm, I mean, no wait, I *AM* easy ;)
Really though, it's more like an hour and 15, as I live in Scarborough, and if you leave my place any later than 2:30, forget it, it's a good 2 hours easy.

Yeah, unfortunately this crash thing I believe has to do with your virtual memory card sometimes (or so I was told).
I have the game do the same thing, where it will never finish the task and when I bring the computer out of it, I lose that game and have to restart earlier. You may also want to check your drives and see how full they are. I have had less problems since I started scanning and defragging my drives more often.
scanning and defragging? that's an interesting take.
they take a long time though and wouldn't you rather be playing MTW? even though it might crash? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
What about loading the autosave or another quicksave or even another save
it's painful when you don't full save often and your quicksave/autosave is stuck in that state.
you are forced to play quite a bit again and this is annoying if it repeats. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif
The last autosave and/or manual save are both at least 4 turns ago, which equates to about an hour and a half to two hours for me due to the number of units that need shuffling, messing with province loyalty, building for some 50-ish provinces, etc.
Doesn't really matter though, as I decided to scrap the game and start a new one (this time as the Danes). I just hope it doesn't happen again.
- Z
yep, I also scrapped an Aragonese High game after being frustrated by this.
It really stinks when your saves get corrupted or CTDs absolutely refuse to let you past a point.
I'm actually glad I did, as I made a LOT of stupid mistakes in that last game, and now with the Danes, I'm actually dumbfounded by how easy the campaign can be if you do trade properly and fairly early. It's so easy that it actually kind of feels like I'm cheating. I'm so far ahead of everyone else in units, advances, building, etc. that I almost feel sorry for the Mongols when they hit in another 10 years, as I'm going to utterly decimate them in 1 turn :D
I really think trade needs to be adjusted, as it's just WAY too lucrative. Being able to field close to 200k units and still turning a 20k florin/year profit is just a little over the top :D
- Z
200k units? I think you must be exaggerating.
trade is a bit unbalanced though.
that's why you should try out medmod in whcih the straits of Gibaltar no longer exists, cutting off the North seas form the Med.
this means no oversized networks that go from the baltic to the black sea.
cutitng this down reduces profits greatly.
also, some surgical removal of sea areas makes the AI capable of vast trading too.
I have never had much luck with trading...mainly cause im to stuck up to make any alliances...in my byz campaign, which im struggling with, Im at war with 7 factions and allied with none hehe.
neutrals can trade with you too.
BTW, war with 7 factions is usually a bad idea.
better to pick your opponents carefully and wipe them out when you do war.
Y'know, you try and double check your post before you hit Add Reply, and wouldn't you know it, the one thing that would throw off the post the most is the one I missed :)
I meant to type 20 (two-zero) thousand, as I don't know that two hundred thousand is even possible (well maybe all peasants, but even still) before the Golden Horde hits.
Anyway, I'll have to look at that mod you mentioned. Maybe it will add a little more balance to the game's trade element.
- Z
as for 20k, the horde comes with 20k and they are higher quality than your troops most likely.
so don't expect to win by autocalc.
try pav arb spamming in bridge battle http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
They lasted 2 turns :) Technically, it was 4 turns as it took 2 turns for me to get there. Fortunately for me, they emerged in 3 provinces and were spread out so thinly that their main province fell on the first turn (saving my French allies) that held close to 13k units giving me a nearly 2:1 advantage. The other two fell on their own to my surprise. Turns out rebellions popped up in both provinces and spawned something like 4k units each. By the third turn, both the Turks and the Polish walked in and decimated them.
Happy turn of events :D Unless you happen to be a Mongol ;)
I'm curious though, aside from uprisings, does the Horde re-emerge akin to their first arrival?
- Z
yeah.
a horde reemergence is scary.
it's worse if rebels join them.
the problem is that if you assasinated the khan and didn't take all the provinces, they might reemerge and all the former GH rebels adn more might declare their allegiance to the remergeing horde.
thus, they can actually become stronger than they first appear if they reemerge.
The only suggestion i have is to quick save at every turn by pressing ctrl + s. If it crashes, you can load it.
did you read my original post?
a bad quick save was the problem.
full saves are more time consuming but safer IMHO.
