View Full Version : Installing VI Question

I was thinking about picking up Viking Invasion, as MTW is already getting old, but I read in another thread that if I install VI, I might be SoL when it came to the original game (it wasn't very specific), so I'm wondering if I install VI, does that mean I won't be able to play the original MTW? I assume also that any campaign saves won't be accessible once I've install VI as well?

And what's new in VI anyway? I understand there's a new world map, but in what way? I mean is it larger? Sectioned differently? And how many new units are there? Or is it more along the lines of something like another faction (the Vikings I assume) with their own units? What about things like the tech tree and improvements?

Just thought I'd get some opinions from people who've already got it to see if I should really bother, or just go back to STW as I'm not sure if I can honestly say I'm enjoying MTW all that much.

well, you get a separate era on a separate map.

that's viking era with british isles and ireland with denmark/norway.

these have 8 viking era factions with distinct units and entirely different tech tree.

there's an improved MTW map with better battle interface and cool new units like avar nobles, viking huscarles, and steppe heavy cav just to name a few.

there's also more HAs like faris and szekelys.

sieger also experiences attrition etc.

it's a great experience and you should install it.

I'm not sure whether savegames are compatible but you can still play the original game (with a couple of extra units and features as Katank said).

When you install it you've got Viking, Early, High and Late Choices for the campaign. The Viking campaign is a vastly expanded map of the british isles and you can play factions like the Mercians, Welsh and The Vikings. Timewise it's a couple of hundred years from the first recorded viking raid to the norman invasion in 1066.

It's not as big as the original map and all units are availible at all times but it's pretty good.

Oh and you won't be able to use mods for MTW 1.1 but you will be able to use VI mods.

savegames aren't compatible but trust me, you'll do things a lot differently in VI and thus would wish for new games anyhow.

Its just plain better. Before each battle you have a detailed report of what units, and their stats, the gens rank name. All kinds of stuff. Some new units. Argonese and Sicily are playable, I dont think they were on Vanilla.
