View Full Version : What About Ambushes?
I am wondering if ambushes will be implemented in RTW. In the TW series, when you engage someone ther is deployment etc. but what I am talking about is taking an army unawares without giving the enemy a chance to deploy etc. Is this possible? It would sure push for more strategy in the game... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Well its said that ambushes are implemented into the game but how they will work noone knows
It's probably like, you'll see a cinimatic of your men marching in a straight line, then suddenly, your enemy springs out of a forest and charges at you. Then your handed control, thats how the historical battle ambush will work anyways.
You can stage ambushes like this in MTW already. I have on a number of occassions seen an army deploy in column; if faced by a defending force deployed forward (on the edge of the deployment perimeter) the battle will begin with both sides in missile range, but with one side still in column and pretty much unprepared to react.
It would seem to me to be a tactic only usable by the barbarians. In one part of the e3 04 trailer it shows a legion marching down a road in a massive column, I'm assuming that you will be able to come down both sides of one of these columns with a hidden army...

It should be usable by anyone.
In History Hannibal managed to conceal his entire army and lay an ambush for the Romans who were pursuing him at Lake Thrasymene...
He got his men to set fires on the far hill to make it look like he had made camp while his entire force hid in the woods beside the road as the Romans marched on by.
The Numidian Cavalry cut off the escape and the Romans were charged from the side. They couldn't even get into battle formation before they were slaughtered.
Such tactics would be best employed by the barbarians, but they should not be restricted to just them.
Too true Emp, btw I think it is spelt Trasimene, or Trasimeno http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I stand fully corrected :P
But for the sake of ballance, I think the barbarians should excel at it. And most of the barb units say "expert and hiding in the forest"

And yes, Hannibal tied torches to the animals to make the romasn believe he was moving forward during the night.Thats what Haeffs sais anyway.... It isnt a good historical source but....

Well I'm no expert in the spelling of the place-name. At any rate my point came across ok.
Still quite an achievement in discipline getting impetuous Gauls and a few thousand men to all sit silently, watching the enemy march past them until the order is geven to attack.
