My most stupid win

Last night defending a measly fort against the Horde's assault, the wierdest thing happened to me. This is probably a bug...

My units were very severely depleted, having lost on open ground the year before. Anyway, the assault starts, and I notice my general is nowhere to be seen (but I had only some 6 or 7 units).
After some battling, where the fort + a couple of Turcopoles manage to do away with three half units of MHC, Mongols take the fort and kill remaining units; instead of getting the end of battle message, POP my general (a lone Jinette) appears on the edge of the map with a couple other units (a lone peasant and a mounted crossbowman). The mongols don't attack and I win on timer expiring. (yes that is very cheesy indeed but I didn't even run around the map, they didn't come, even towards my general)

This is probably a bug which I'd never seen before - as besides the horde, there aren't that many assaults - but can it be replicated? (i.e. can you have reinforcements when defending from an assault?)

you can have reinforcements as long as total men is less than fort's capacity.

as for general, I don't know but clipping is a problem and units sometimes gets stuck in the walls.

your men in the assaults will have +8 morale and thus are capable of amazing feats of bravery.

Ok, I didn't know you could have reinforcements, but it makes sense as capacity is in men/horses, not units but I'm quite certain I didn't have 16 units on the field at the beginning and my general's unit was not on the bottom list.

The surprising things with the general are first, that he didn't appear at the beginning and (2) that the Mongols didn't go get him even when he was the last man.
I don't think it was a clipping issue but rather a problem with the way reinforcements were dealt with, moreover a single Billman managed to do away with quite a few MHC so I think he did have the general's bonus (was a 8* although a coward)

morale shouldn't be an issue and if they don't rout, they do well.

How many did that billman kill? I've looked at logfiles and seen single men in a halb unit that killed more than 40 men

since I fought nothing but MHC using that unit, that means 1 guy took out a whole unit of MHC over the course of the battle and that's pretty cool.

maybe you just never noticed your general since he was hidden by the castle?

also, your jinette general could have just skirmished away from the enemy when they tried to engage him.

I should've saved the battle, but I'm pretty sure my general was nowhere near the castle, his unit card was not on the screen and when he appeared I got the same clicking sound as when new reinforcements come.
I tend to put any fast cavalry outside the walls when defending a siege, as it makes the siege last longer, but I wouldn't have done that with a coward single man unit... or did I? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

you mean to say that there was no unit tab with a star on the screen?

are you sure that jinette was the general?

Yep, pretty sure he was the general (he was 8*). I don't think before he was on screen there was another one with a star and I'm positive he had one when he appeared (I even checked his flag on the battlefield and it was a general's)

is it possible that he was placed into the reinforcements and hence wasn't really commanding the battle? like the trick to get kings to not command but still use his unit in VI with reinforcements

Usually I wouldnt degrade myself to such tactics, but the pope reemerged VERY early in my italion medmod expert campaign with an army that rivaled HRE's. When they assulted my keep and curtain all, I put a group of 5 cont. cavalry outside the castle on the other side, then when the battle started I ran him off into the woods. After my keep fell the time expred with the papists just standing around haha. I did this 2 more times before my food ran out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
