Quick question... I'm playing as Spain, and since Castille is where the True Cross gets found in 1206, I built a reliquary to hold it (makes sense, naturally, you'd build a shrine for that sort of thing). Here's the odd thing. Since I built it, I can't build a cathedral. Does that sound right, or is something buggered up in my game?
You can only build one (1) cathedral since it's a unique structure. Maybe you've already built one?
I believe you need a citadel also.

Aha I didn't know you could only have one Cathedral. Being the good Catholic Spaniard that I am, I built it in Palestine.
Can you build reliquaries in multiple locations?
Also, if you can only build one cathedral, that means you can only build one university and hence, one college of surgeons and one military academy, correct?

Reliquaries are not restricted, so you can build one in each province if you want.
University, college of surgeons and military academy are unique structures too.
The only way to get more than one cathedral/university/etc is conquering an enemy province and capturing the building (it'll probably be destroyed anyway, but sometimes you might be lucky and keep it).

Wow, I did not know that. Thanks for the tip. If I had known that, I probably wouldn't have picked Palestine as my unique structure location (would have made it in Castille or Leon where I'm almost guaranteed to hold onto it). Live and learn.

It's one way to build several of these. After finishing the university you can destroy your cathedral and build it somewere else and repeat the process. It's only useful for the Turks though (Grand mosque is also unique).

You can always tear it down http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-builder.gif and build it again, you just lose time and some of the money (25%? I can't remember OTOH)

I don't know, that kinda smacks a little of cheating. If they only want you to have one of each of those buildings, working around the system by destroying and rebuilding the cathedral. At least now I know what's going on, I thought I had screwed something up.
Inquisitors are Catholic-only right? What's the deal with Orthodox monestaries?
you can mod it by going into the building behavior column in gnome and killing the UNIQUE tag.
never made much sense to me that I couldn't have glorious monuments all across my empire.
you get 50% refund IIRC from razed buildings.
also, the catholic and orthodox share religious buildings.
I've had my Byz forces capture catholic churches intact and I could spam priests fromt here instantly.
the reliquary doesn't yield inquisitors for the orthodox although you do get a morale bonus for building it so it's a reasonable thing to build a reliquary as orthodox for upgrading troops. If you want good halbs to hold off the mongols in high as the Russians, building a reliquary is often a good idea in conjunction with the silver armor that you start with.
Finally I can build Jannissary units in multiple locations.

increase unit morale and the province loyalty
for pagans, try modding in pagan shrine and sacrificial altar from the VI campaign for Vikings into the MTW map so that mongols for example can get it. good luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
for further instructions, go to the dungeon. it's been done before.
