Does anyone know what Aragorn's last name is? It's for a LOTR fanfiction I'm writing. I think it's Ellessar but I wanted to be sure.

um, he doesn't exactly have a last name so to speak. he does however have titles that often go along with his name. such as.......... King of Gondor, Son of Arathorn and Ellesar. Monk would probably know better than me.

Telcontar
telcontar = strider in the high tongue, however, that was to be begun if the Kingdom was saved and the king succesfully returned.......... cant remember the chapter, but it is in the RoTK the book http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Think Elessar was his Elven name. Interesting to research his genealogy because one of his ancestors was called Boromir, who was the grandfather of Barahir (whose ring Aragorn wears), who was the father of Beren. Also had forgotten that Aragorn was descended from Elrond's brother, Elros, the first king of Numenor, who chose to be a mortal.

Aragorn II, known to others as simply Aragorn is the second Chieftain of the Northern DĂșnedain to carry that name. He was raised in Rivendell secretly where he was known as Estel, he did not even know he was Isildur's heir until he was twenty when Elrond told him the truth.

He had no last name, his surname of Elessar means Elfstone, it was given to him in Lorien by the Noldor Galadriel when she gave him a gift of a green stone set in a silver brooch in the shape of an eagle. As she gave him the gift she said this take the name that was foretold for you, Elessar, the Elfstone of the house of Elendil

In fact, after he became king of the Reunited Kingdom, he was later after called 'King Ellesar'

other than the names i have presented here; he also went by the names Strider, Thorongil, and Wingfoot But as for his last name, he was given none, so one can say Ellesar is is true surname.

I consider myself pretty LOTR-literate but come on, translating names? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif

i figured It was common knowledge that Ellesar meant Elfstone, since tolkien practically comes out and says it in the book. Besides, when you read Unfinished Tales, Book of lost tales, the shaping of Middle-earth, and the history of middle-earth Vol 1 and 2, you can't help but pick up a few translations. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Ah ok guys thanks. I'm attempting to write a LOTR fanfiction this summer set in 2005. The main character is supposed to be Aragorn's heir so I needed to know the last name.

Once I've got a little bit done I'll post it here (all I've got is 1/2 a page right now).

The title right now is LOTR: The 3rd Rise

So Aragorn is descended from Elrond's brother, who's daughter he then marries?

One can better understand Elrond Half-Elven's pain, with his only daughter choosing mortality when he had already seen his beloved brother choose the same path.

oh, if it is his heir, Telcontar would be correct, as that was to be the name of his house. Telcontar means Strider. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

You forget that there were dozens of generations of ancestors, from Elros to Aragorn. So, effectivelly, one can imagine no consanguinity... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wink.gif
