View Full Version : An Intro and a Request
Greetings All,
First I would like to introduce myself. I have been interested in Japanese history for more years than I like to admit. Mainly I am a naval miniatures gamer but after seeing the Total War games I decided to give, naturally, Shogun Total War a whirl. Now for the request
I installed the game last night STW/WE, and it seems to be working fine with the exception of not having a Throne Room icon. Am I doing something wrong, I am playing as the, green clan, sorry I'm at work and can not remember the family name at the moment. Does my leader need to leave the castle to activate the Throne Room icon? Do I need to build a throne room? I am running win2k with 128mb 3d video card and a sound blaster audio card.
Hope someone can help me out
Cheers & thanks in advance http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-help.gif
You need to activate 'throne room' in the options menu. Then the throne room icon (showing your clan's symbol) will appear next to the build/train buttons. The Shimazu clan (green) has a green wheel as symbol.

Thanks so much for the quick reply When I go to the options menu there is no check box for the throne room The other option all have a check box but the words Throne Room are there but without a check box
Will I have to reinstall?
Cheers
Also, thanks to Drake and Ludens

Hi Doug,
I have been doing some research and I think that if I uninstall and do a full reinstall that I should be able to get the throne room. Even though I only have played the campaign game for about a half hour and did the tactical game tutorial this game looks like a blast Just hoping to get the throne room working.
Do you think I could just reinstall without first uninstalling or is it safer to do the uninstall first.
Looking forward to learning this gem

Then just wait until you play MTW. Way more detail around economic and religious management, hundreds of new units, naval warfare...
BTW, welcome to the Org

Greetings Gents,
There is joy in the kingdom I did the full install and there was the Throne Room. Now off to learn this game. Thanks to all for keeping my spirits up and I will get back with all the mistakes I make in my first campaign http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I have MI and I know I have to have a full install of the original shogun to get the throne room. The checkbox in the options menu just determines whether you will recieve emissaries in the throne room, you can still check the map and advisor if you have the box unchecked.
There is a thread in the sword dojo for requesting a shogun avatar.
Hey Gents,
Over the weekend I played my first Campaign as the Shimazo clan. I actually won I love this game. There is currently a statue of my most exulted self on the Ginza Next time I'll keep notes and post an AAR. I know, I know, there goes my naval wargameing side bursting out.

Well Done Aki Looking forward to one of your AARs
Welcome to the org Yes it's a great place but remember: in times of peace a gentleman keeps his sword by his side.

Thanks Sinan I don't deserve to many credits though I used the resolve battles button as I have not yet learned to fight in the 3D battles yet. But that is my next objective now that I have learned to use the campaign mode. Wish me luck, as I will need it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

I tried posting in the Sword Dojo to request an STW avatar but it seems that I can not yet post there Will do as soon as I can.

Greetings All,
Played the Battle of Anegawa last night after doing the tutorial battles I don't know if this is correct but it seems that the final tutorial battle runs very fast in comparison to the normal battles.
I took a real beating my first try but managed to win on the second. Still I don't think it was a very great victory as my General was the last remaining warrior in the heavy cav unit and all I had left in addition was a samurai yari unit and a samurai arq unit. I drove the remaing enemy yari unit from the field.
A few questions on tactics:
1. I had placed my samurai arg unit at one end of the western most bridge (far left when facing enemy) backed with an Ashigaru yari unit backed again with a samurai yari unit. I used my ashigaru to try and darw the enmy troops into attack. I sent them accross the bridge and when the enemies units came to attack I opened fire on them with my riflemen and withdrew the ashigaru back accross the bridge, I did this a few times each time knocking off several of the enemy.
2. I tried the same tactic on the far eastern bridge with limited success as the enemy did not try tp press the attack in face of my samurai archers which I used as the riflemen on the western bridge.
My center was strongly held with my various cav units and footmen. My question is how can you draw an enemy general into the attack? I tried to get them to cross over where I was all set to ambush them. Smart AI
In the end I had to cross and force the battle to a conclusion, which was very bloody for both sides. I would not want a win like this in campaign mode as my army was seriously depleted even though victorious. All in all this is a great game and I can see that learning the tactics of the time will take some doing.
Do any of you sage warriors have advice on how to force a bridge crossing with the forces available in the Anegawa battle without such a great cost in troops?
Cheers

Aki, victory is all that matters in those historical battles. Bridge battles are never pretty. I don't recall this particular battle, so I can't help you specifically. Sometimes you have to cross that bridge and bear the burden of attack. If you won on your second try, you can't be doing too badly.
The thing about many of the historical battles and their set unit positioning, is that there is a trick to winning the battle. Once you figure out the trick, you can usually win the game. That is the one thing I find annoying about them. But anyway, congratulations on your victory http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif

I seem to remember that the best strategy for that battle was to attack right away before the ai could get all its troops up to the bridge.

In campaign mode, when attacking bridges, you basically have three options, of which only two are acceptable.
1) A normal army attacking the bridge = bloodbath, a potential victory for the good tactician.
2) A specially raised army for the SOLE purpose of attacking bridges = almost a win for every general, can be messy
3) Round up as many units as possible (Im talking 10 times as many as currently stationed in the province) then the AI will probably withdraw = safe victory, note that sometimes he decides to stay.
