View Full Version : General's Stars = What effects?
General's Stars = What effects?
What does each star really get for you?
I read that for each 2 stars the army he leads gets +1 valor bonus. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif
Ok on that point, is that bonus for the army in HIS STACK only? Or, let's say I send in my 9 star general and 2 other stacks into a province to attack. Do my other 2 stacks get a valor bonus too?
I noticed the detail window over my men on the battle map says encouraged by the general's reputation so I'll assume each star gives some level of morale boost. What is it per star?
I also suspect a high star general instills fear (counted within lowered morale affect?) in the enemy if the enemy has a lesser star general opposing me.
What else am I missing here?
All of your troops in one province are commanded by the best general. So, they all get the valour bonus. I think the encouragement they're talking about is the valour. But, I'm sure katank or ichi will clear this up as a for sure thing.

For every 2 stars of a general, you get +1 attack and defense (+1 defense for the first star and +1 attack for the second). I think that every star adds one morale point for units close to the general and for units further away, every two stars add 1 morale.
But I'm not 100% sure of it.
cutepuppy is right http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
It adds the valour, which is the added attack, defense, and morale bunuses.

i think yes, because your army will be add up, and the extras will be counted as reinforcements. But if your general dies, then i think the bonuses will also be gone. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/barrel.gif
Cutepuppy gets the scoobie snack here.
(Tested in MTW VI 2.01)
Adding a 2-star Gen with no other V&Vs will increase the valor of all of the units that he commands in battle (not just his stack) by 1, add 1 to attack and 1 to def.
The armor, charge, and morale doesn't automatically change, but any units with 50 meters will also receive +1 morale per/2 stars of the General (for reference, an archer can shoot about 100 meters in the game).
combining a FMAA with a 2-star Royal Knight Gen
FMAA Valor Att Def Armor Morale
Before 0 3 7$ 8$ 4
After 1 4 8$ 8$ 4
Their morale only goes up when within 50m of the Gen

I thought I read that dread didn't have any effect on the battlefield?

1) Dread has no direct effect on the battlefield. I don't know if it has any effects on VnVs which affect the battle.
- dread has no effect. let this rumor die finally
@ichi - are you sure about morale? the official strat guide and most other morale lists give +1 morale/star within 50 meters, +1 morale/2-stars beyond 50 meters.
- also, there has been an open issue regarding the in battle stats (via F1) which has never received any official comment. Basically, sometimes F1 shows the correct att/def modifiers you would expect for your general's command, other times it seems to be off. Is it just displaying them incorrectly or is command not being applied correctly? Just last night i saw my V5 Turcoman Horse (base Att/Def of 1/1) with +1 armor but F1 displayed 4/5 when it should have been 6/7. Then i noticed my AHC were also off by a point in both att/def. Though other times F1 does display correctly, so it's not in every battle. (and yes, i checked the V&Vs for those units, etc., etc. The numbers weren't correct)
The morale stats I mention were taken from the post on morale in the MTW library here at the Org.
I too have found some things that appeared to be inconsistencies in the F1 stats, altho I'm not smart enuff to confirm them as such.
If Dread has no effect on the battlefield, then what does it affect? Why have I seen troops simply run away from High Dread Gens, without even making contact?

- in my current turk campaign, i had a sultan with 4 command, 8 dread (butcher and another +dread virtue). Under constant attack, yet even after I butchered the first 10 waves of a 6500 man english invasion (vs. around 2700 of my own men), they kept on coming onto the field. I tried trapping them at their reinforcement point, but those billmen were murder coming downhill. Fact was, even with their commander dead, the english troops were still good/better quality compared to what i could field. Believe me, i was praying they'd just retreat, but endless waves kept marching in, despite 8 dread.
- i don't know how to explain why some AI armies even come on the field when they simply withdraw, but in my experience it's when your overall army is just powerful. I always pay special attention when one of my high dread but low command generals goes into battle, and the enemy rarely runs from them unless the troops themselves are far superior.
- plus, when a dev says Dread has no direct effect on the battlefield i'd tend to believe him unless i've seen concrete evidence to the contrary.
===========================
Was that the morale thread from the TOC? Unless the official strat guide is incorrect, the parameters i noted are the correct morale effects of a general's command. I'm pretty sure they just didn't copy it correctly, since everything else listed in that thread is straight from the guide.

Related to this, what about a general's v&vs? If he is, say, -3 morale due to gluttony or something, that's just him, right? V&vs only affect just the generals unit?
Also, the morale bonus that the general can give - this only affects the likelihood of your units routing, yes? IOW, does a very high morale, in and of itself, affect anything else? (attack, defense, etc.) While it's true that very high morale units are likely to be good in other areas as well (because they probably came from a high-tech province and/or you have a great general), in and of itself, does morale do anything except determine the breaking point of a unit?

Morale doesn't change any combat stat. I think that a general's v&v only has effect on his unit (for valor I'm sure, maybe morale affecting v&v's have an effect on the whole army)

general's valor virtues affect only his unit
general's morale virtues affect his whole army. your general getting one of those runner traits can really ruin a whole army.
- morale is for determining rout and how long a unit pursues enemy routers. impetuous morale units will chase far longer than steady units.
- while morale doesn't improve a unit's direct combat stats, they will fight longer and accept higher casualties before they rout. Thus, an inferior unit with very high morale can often beat a superior unit with low morale - the low morale unit will rout with fewer casualties while the inferior/high-morale boys will step over the bodies and ask for seconds. (ghazis are a good case in point with their 8 morale - they'll often fight on despite losing more men the whole battle. I've seen 5 ghazis chase 25 FMAA off the field)

I use to think it was my General's high dread rating that use to make enemy armies run screaming like little girls, but thinking back on it now most of the encounters were where I had a high command general and the enemy only had a low command one.
