I've had the game for like two months or so and it's been great but I'm only just now starting to play the battles instead of auto-calcing them. Anyway, I'm playing as the Danes and though it took me 30+ turns I've finally gotten the game going (took me forever to get enough ships for a trade route to France and England). I had a small army prepared (500 troops) and I invaded the nearest German province.
It turned out to be a bridge battle with me having 500 troops and they had around 900. I hadn't planned on having a bridge battle so I only had 1 archer compared to their 4. As soon as the battle started I positioned my spearmen to protect the bridge entrance, archers to attack anyone on the bridge, and swordsmen/woodsmen to attack. I noticed the AI had put its archers right in front of the bridge so I charged a unit of swordsmen across the bridge to attack the archers. Unfortunately, the AI was prepared and had a spearman ready to marche in front of the archers, effectively stopping my attack. However, their spearmen weren't in formation when my swords hit (and the spears were still in loose) so my swords began to rip through. I sent a spearman in because the swords had soon routed (after another 2 units of enemy spears arrived). Anyway, this is getting too long so to sum it up I sent several (defense +1) spears to hold them off and once I got them on the offensive attacked with archers and another unit of spears. My spears held them at bay for a while and once they began to slip I sent in both of my units of swords to easily rip them apart, making all their troops rout. I sent my general and an extra royal knight to attack all routing enemies and captured around 100. I killed the prisoners so the death toll for my enemy was around 700 while I lost only 100 troops.
Anyway, I was bored and thought I'd write this.
