People who changed the world are very often regarded as national heroes.

Sometimes these extraordinary men are considered national heroes by more than one nation.

How many such heroes do You know ?

My proposals

Kazimierz ( Casimir) Pulaski - hero of Poland ( general during Bar Confederacy) and of USA ( created American cavalry).

Tadeusz Kosciusko
- hero of Poland ( general in war against Russia in 1792 and leader of so-called 'Kosciusko Uprising' in 1794),
- of USA ( general, build West Point and field fortifications during several battles e.g. Saratoga),
and of Belorussia - he was born there ( Poland at that time) and Kosciusko Uprising was also Belorussian fight as well,

Josef ( Joseph ) Bem
- hero of Poland ( general during November Uprising in 1831),

and of Hungary - commander of Hungarian army during Hungarian uprising in 1848 - 1849,

Of the leaders of the '16 rising , one was viewed as a national hero by two countries . Ireland of course , but also Britain .
Sir Roger Casement ; He was awarded the C.M.G. for his work in the Belgian Congo ,he was Knighted for his work in Peru and Brazil . Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based one of his charachters on him (Lord Roxton , Lost World 1912) ,The presiding judge at his appeal against conviction for treason commisioned a top artist to paint a portrait of him (presently in the national portrait gallery London , but usually at Kings Inns Dublin after being moved from the Royal Courts of Justice).

Another person who could be viewed as a "hero" by more than one nation is General Vlasov , Hero of the Soviet Union in the defense of Moscow (against the axis), Hero of the Russian people in the fight against Stalinism (for the axis) , Hero in the liberation of Czechoslovakia (against the remains of the axis) .
Then again could someone who managed to change sides 3 times in 4 years in 1 war be called a "Hero" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I would say Johan van Oldenbarneveld; great statesman and leader of Holland and the United Republic against Spain, he was beheaded in 1619 after a nasty disagreement with the Steward, Maurits of Orange-Nassau.

I'd add to that Piet Heyn, the great buccaneer who nabbed us a shitload of silver from the Spanish silverfleet, and got the United Republic some serious dough for the war.

And to that Michiel de Ruyter, arguably our greatest admiral and a man who played a very important role in making Holland rule the waves.

And last but not least, Frederik Hendrik 'de Stedendwinger': 'The Forcer of Cities'. My favorite Steward of Holland, a great and brave man.

You could say some of these men were great leaders, not heroes. Well then, if so, add William III of England, who nabbed himself the kingship of the greatest rival to our naval supremacy, and some glorious land victories as well.
