I realized that apart from the usual generals that appear from time ti time with 3 or 4 stars just after building the unit, the guys that more often get stars are CMAA.
I made an experiment and created 10 CMAAs in Mercia.
2 of them had no stars at all, 5 had 1 star, 2 had 2 stars and one had 3 stars.
So Im creating CMAAS in Mercia just for the sake of some medium quality gens, apart from the sheer need of CMAAs, of course.
Did anyone else get that?

Yes, that's because CMAA are an elite unit and they are preferred for general candidate. The same happens with chivalric knights and some other units.

any chance you have a special building in Mercia? like a Marshall's palace or something?
I've been wondering about the possible effects of buildings. e.g. the University says something about future generations being smarter.
This happens for several units. I think cutepuppy probably has the right explaination.

ah, sorry I wasn't clear - I wasn't disagreeing with cp. I was just also wondering about buildings.
yep, preferred candidates can have up to 3* if nonhero IMHO.
this is also dependent upon ruler influence and command.
high influence high command rulers tend to produce 3* or at least 2* gens out of the box as well as better command ships.

I've noticed any Chivalric unit usually gets a low star rating of some kind (1* to 3*), I wish I could get more though with higher ratings but that never happens. I noticed in my last English campaign I got a few real good generals that weren't heros (from what I could tell) or ex-heirs, but they were 7 and 8 star generals right off the bat.
I also wish I knew the secret to farming stars (or generals for that matter) better, although the defensive virtues aren't too hard to get. My Danish empire is in want of much better generals to lead my armies and I never seem to get anything when I attack enemies.

Yesterday in my english/hard campaign in attacking Portugal (spanish), my 6* gen (killer ins, great warrior, secret pride. captured) got Skilled attacker and skilled defender after just one battle.(I was attacking) is it completely random?

I've found that generally if you attack or defend and are outnumbered then you usually get the skilled attacker/defender if you win. I have no idea about getting both of them in the same turn though, they are not ever randomly generated I dont think. Oh well, pretty good outcome anyway

Oh, Im not complaining, dont get me wrong http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
I think you need close to 2-1 against you to get skilled vices.
have less than 2-1 and you get poor odds attacker or skileld last stand etc.

As far as I know the only way to get stars in to win battles.
Is there a certain building that boosts the stats/no. of stars of the generals produced? Also, which are the best factions for generals - apart from the byz, of course http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif
generals are only relaibly gotten from high command heirs which require high command and influence kings.
Byz have the best Spanish are second, English and Russians are tied for third with the Almos IMHO.
the French get a pair of nice heroes 5* from the start etc.
only heroes and heirs are guaranteed.
I just farm my heirs to have a good commander reach the throne and pruning the rest.
I also try to marry em early for more heirs=more kickass generals. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
