I attacked the Irish in Guent using the Vikings. This map is one of the Welsh starting provinces and it has very high hills.

After I have routed all but 1 group of peasants, the AI sent in that last group of peasants as reinforcement. However, they got stuck in the hills at the edge of the map and couldn't go forward. Since they were beyond the playable part of the field, my troops couldn't attack them. I tried everything, including ordering my berserkers to keep attacking the peasants. This only resulted in one of them routing off the field due to me ordering them too much. I tried positioning the others then routing them to see if they would come into contact with the peasants while routing and rout them too. Some came close but not close enough.

Needless to say, I lost the battle due to the time limit and reloaded the damn thing.

Seen that a few times. Often in a hilly map with impassible terrain near the edge. Troops often get stuck, sometimes spread around the impassible terrain.

In your case, may be missiles could solve the problem. Either kill all of them, or until they rout, or kill enough of the stuck guys so unit can move again. Other than that, they are invincible http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Remember one fun battle in STW:MI, I won a battle with 1 unit of ashiguru crossbows against 2 unit of mongol heavy cav.
I was aiming for fireing until his cav was about to reach me then I withdrawed. Then I saw that his cav suddently stopped running so I re-ordered my bows to fire. And they was standing there, able to fire volley after volley into the first unit that couldn't catch them, until they all was dead. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It was hard to keep them there until the next cav came, but I was able to pull of the same thing on the next unit to. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Never tried it afterwards though, considering the obvious cheating.

I reloaded, had it happen again, reloaded again and had it happen again. Same 100 peasant unit in the 3rd, 9 unit gallowglass in the 2nd.

I noticed that you can set a reinforcement point farther than you can order a unit to walk to. What I did was withdrew one of my units, set up the reinforcement point as close as possible to the peasant units and then called for reinforcements. After or immediately before arriving at the reinforcement point, the battle ended. I guess the reinforcement unit came close enough to the peasant unit that the AI decided to withdraw the peasant unit.

that's weird.

nice tip about reinforcements going further than troops.

will try this if that happens.

would be funny to see holy spot bug combined with this and hte AI woudl be stuck with all their units packed into a tiny space and my missiles would have a field day

Missiles? When that happened to me, I just reduced the number of lines of my troops to stretch them out. I then position my troops around the other guy then attack. It's a fun slaughter.
