Whilst making my Wheel of Time mod, I took out all faction associations from the crusaders_unit_prod and used it as a base for my mod. I also took out faction associations for custom battles. I did this simply by copying:
Code Sample Yes ALL_PERIODS
ALL_FACTIONS[/QUOTE]
into every box. By doing this I of course made it so every unit was availiable as a merc.

In game some pretty weird things started happening. I saw a princess for hire, and several boats. I tried hireing one of the boats (in a coastal province) and the ship appeared as a land unit of one man. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif The game CTD after the next turn so I never hired the princess.

I was wondering if it would be possible to make this work. Then you could have special ships e.g. corsairs which could be hired as mercs. You could also make it so u can hire better assasins and stuff. Is it possible?? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

try making a special inn for boats and such, that is probably the problem.
make it like ports only buildable on the coast and like a shipwright in a way where it makes the soldier appear on the ocean next to.

this is how i think you can do it, i just looked into it and it seems there is about 10 classifications for buildings, just turn ports into ship producers.
and make it a shady building.
add agent producer to inns and make princesses a merc agent.
