N00B with a question!

Hello I've been playing MTW and MTW:VI for awhile now, and couldn't resist buying STW. I saw STW on sale for $3.00 O.o lol. Anyway, I seem to have a crash to desktop problem with the game. The tech support people are real unhelpful, not sure why maybe because its an older game. Either way, After my first year I get the agriculture info. screen then the sound starts to distort and the game locks up. IF I click the agriculture OK button then it seems alright...until about the 4th year (10-15 turns) then the game crashes to desktop. Im running WIN XP, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, 768 Ram, 1.6mhz P4...with the latest drivers btw. If you have any advice, please please let me know
P.S.-I also turned off almost all background apps

I found something new, I tried the program again, and it said Direct Sound Failure. This killed all sound in game, but I actually played about 30 rounds ...then it crashed again. If you could clarify a point for us: do you have the original STW, or the Warlords Edition with the Mongol campaign? Or do you have the jewelcased Battle Collection? If you have either of the first two, have you installed the latest patch?
