yeah. i never buy movies sight-unseen, regardless of their reputation (though Ran is widely considered kurosawa's masterpiece). you could try going slightly further afield to find a copy.. there must be more video stores out there, yeah?
psst you could try looking for it on *Amazon.com or some other legal venue* note: edit assist provided free-of-charge by Kukri :)

Gents,
Ran is a great movie and a Kurosawa masterpiece, btw Ran means chaos But if you want to see a great, and I mean great Kurosawa film I suggest Kagemusha, it means shadow warrior and it deals with Takeda Shingen. Some excellent large scale battle scenes in it as well.
Cheers

Fantastic film. A Japanese adaptation of King Lear. Don't be put off by the fact it's in subtitles, it's really, really good. Get it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

I'll eventually track down Ran.
Kagemusha is a very good movie. I liked how he worked the story around historical events.
About subtitles: when deciding whether or not to watch a movie, subtitles is usually a reason for me to skip the movie and watch something else. However, once I start watching a subtitled movie, it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, if the movie is really good, I don't even realize I'm reading subtitles. I just have to learn to get over that initial reluctance to watch a movie with subtitles.

Subtitles is actually a good thing for me. Take a great film, say, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Both my G/f and her sister watched it dubbed, hated it and really didn;t get on with the plot. I watched it subtitled (gotta love DVD's) and loved it. I then forced them to sit downj and watch it subtitled (it really took some effort after their opinion had been dulled by watching it dubbed) and they loved it, really loved it.
The only time subtitles has ever annoyed me is when it;s white on white or black on black and therefore completely unreadable.

heh, my last posts reads rather oddly now that a mod edited it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
for my money, i'll take Ran over Kagemusha any day. but i'm not a huge kurosawa buff or anything (i only marginally liked seven samurai)
