For those of you who know what is going on, I post here the introduction to the battle report to whet your appetites. I will post the rest, including screenshots when complete and the participants have had an opportunity to review it.

For those of you who don't know what's going on, I suggest you read the "Formal Challenge to Magyar" thread!

Shadowkill's Last Hurrah (give me a break, it's a working title! lol)

The old man's bones ached as he knelt down in front of the Kamiza, the family shrine. He lit incense and offered up prayers to his ancestors asking for guidance one last time. For many years now he had ruled his family's lands fairly and with an iron fist against all intruders. Now he was approaching the end of his reign. No longer did he yearn for the battlefield; now he yearned only for release. Shadowkill Watanabe was tired.

As he prayed to his ancestors he reflected on his life as Daimyo. He had no heirs remaining and knew that his clan would perish upon his death. He thought long on this, asking for the answer. As he sat, a voice spoke to him saying three words "It is time". Shadowkill Watanabe rose from the Kamiza and called for his generals. His path was clear and he knew what must be done.
………………………………………..

From far across the land, the Shinobi returned hastily. All bore the same news; Shadowkill Watanabe was mobilizing. The Daimyo sat upon his throne and contemplated the news. His body bore the scars of many battles. Most had been won, some had been lost, but his realm was secure against all. Fear kept his enemies at bay, the prize for his long years of battle.

Many times he had fought Watanabe, his honored enemy, but time had marched on and they had not faced each other for many years. "So, yet again he challenges me" the lord of the realm said to himself as he left his throneroom and headed into the courtyard. His face grew grim as he gave thought to the coming storm. "Let this time be the last" Magyar Khan Ii said to himself as he strode across the courtyard towards the stables of his mighty calvary.

…………………………………………..

Weeks passed. Shinobi, Ninja and Geisha all contended with each other to gain as much information as possible and to prevent the enemy from doing the same. The two Daimyo, veterans of many wars, knew that the time had come. There would be no more information. No more secrets revealed or hidden information gathered. The time had come for battle. All that mattered now was who would prevail on the field of honor. The ravens and crows gathered around the rugged hills of Aki, physical harbingers of the death that would come.

................MORE TO COME.................

The two armies met on the plains of Totomi. Rivals to the core, their differing philosopies were readily apparent once the fog of war was lifted and battle enjoined! The Gaijin General Ship Of Fear employed a well-balanced mix of forces, with a strong contingent of Teppo ashigaru to the fore-stiffened by samurai compatriots holding Yari spears. To either flank were positioned samurai armed with large No-dachi swords, and buddhist monks armed with naginata- carrying their small shrines. Backing the center forces were two units of archers, and the great Gaijin-Daimyo himself, ironically clad in the wardrobe of a Buddhist Monk! His honor was high.

The opposing force was diametrically different. Where Ship employed specialist units the Rival settled upon a monochromatic approach...he emptied all the Temples of his homeland bringing the whole of his host, regardless of their individual level of skill and honour! Surely, he thought, no man can deny the religious zeal of such a force!

The Rival charged as a mindless mass... screams of "Namu Amida Butsu" filled the air!!!

Ship calmly deployed his improved arquesbusque-armed Teppo in ranks of three, to attain a rolling volley effect, and raked the leading units relentlessly. The archers, with their greater range, shot deep into the following ranks. The Rival was helpless to counter these tactics, but consoled himself with the promise of violent retribution against these impudent ashigaru! When it became clear that the Rival was closing in on his Teppo, Ship withdrew his gunners behind the rigid formation of Yari-armed samurai, then rapidly redeployed the Teppo to provide covering fire.

The first wave fell upon the stead-fast Yari, held firmly in place by orders from their General. Seeing a numerical advantage The Rival continued to pour in his units to the center, thinking "If I can only reach his General, all will be won"! The Yari held valiantly, while the archers and Teppo poured in the lead. Still, the Yari were only flesh not Kami, and began too waver!

Suddenly, as if out of a vision, the flank's of Ship's army began to pinch in the flanks of the Rival. The cream of the Gaijin-led army were in the wings not the center! It became a race for Ship's General, who would win...the Rival with his fanatical single-minded determination, or Ship's renowned troops on the flanks? First a trickle...then a rill...then a flood of Sohei start to run! The weaker men of the Rival's army were unable to take the strain of such bloody combat, but his core of loyal followers remained. Ship then decided to diregard the flight of the Rival's weak-willed monks, and instead concentrate on circumvillating the Rival in a wall of steel!

The rest is as they say...History

P.S. sorry to wax poetic, but I couldn't wait for the next installment of Obake's story! Surely Magy and Shadow used much more diverse tactics!

Metha,

Tweren't Magy Ship was describing, but some other that he managed to teach a lesson about the drawbacks of rushing to.

The next installment in the Magyar Khan/Shadowkill saga awaits the receipt of certain information from Shadowkill.

BTW Magy, I think you are right! There needs to be a place to post battle reports. The Totalwar site had one at one point and I had submitted my original battle report (for those of you who remember) for posting, but shortly after I did so, that portion of the site disappeared! I know that other Clans (Chain for instance) maintain a portion of their Web site for battle reports and I have actually read quite a few good ones. Maybe we should consider opening a thread along those lines. I would also like to see screenshots added in.

Just a thought that has occurred to me...

Wouldn't it be great if we could have these kinds of battle reports in the online campaign? For example, each clan could nominate someone to write a 'Campaign Diary' or something, describing the events that have happened in that turn; the valiant defeats, crushing victories, treacherous betrayals etc. I'm thinking that maybe a clan could appoint someone, either permanently or on a rotational basis, to keep a written record of the clan's progress. At the end of the campaign we would have a library of reports which would be a history of the campaign, from the different perspectives of the different clans.

Just a thought. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

No Ship it isn't either. I ended up getting waylaid by evil spirits attempting to distract me from my purpose. More specifically, I bought the wife a dual-receiver satellite system for X-mas and spent the weekend setting that up (had to do some quick re-wiring inside the house, the dish itself only took about an hour).

My cousin, the ghost in the machine then chose to wreak havoc on my computer resulting in almost having to re-format my 16Gb Hard-drive. So...............

I will be working on getting the report posted as soon as possible and Iappreciate everyone patience!

AND NOW.........THE NEXT INSTALLMENT IN OUR STORY...............

It was a cloudy day as Khan rode upon the fields of Aki among his hatamoto of heavily armored cavalry, the cream of his forces. With him were 15 of his most trusted vassals. The Miyoshi brothers Ujisato, Tokinao and Higozaemon each rode at the head of a unit of mounted archers and Kurushima Yoshitaka answered Khan's call with his fast riding Yari armed cavalry.

Khan also brought a strong contingent from the house of Kurushima. Two units of muskets under Chikamasa and Tadamune, a unit of Samurai trained in Kyudo under Ujimasa and guardians for these troops in the form of Naginata wielding Samurai under Katsuharu. Another group of archers took the field under Kikkawa Sadayasu. Khan's regular troops were rounded out by Yari armed Samurai units under the command of the Ouchi's, Masatsuma and Sodan.

Khan's forces were complemented by Sohei from the regional shrine, four units strong under command of the Abbot Asai's sons Yoshiakira, Michhichika and Terumasa. The fourth unit was commanded by Kono Motochika

As Magyar Khan surveyed the field, he saw that the best place to command from was a hillock with a small stand of trees. Immediately to the north a shallow depression rising sharply to the crest of the hill protecting his front. Opposite the gulley was another rise to nearly the same height at which he had deployed his troops.. To his right rose steep hills and to the left rolling ground with additional stands of trees. Behind him was flat ground should he need to pull back. Khan deployed his ranged units just below the crest of the hill in order to rain death upon any so foolish as to attack this strong position. To the left he placed two of the three Miyoshi brothers with their cavalry archers to protect his left flank. Along with them he placed one of his Yari units under Ouchi Masatsuna. To the right of the copse of trees were the Yari cavalry under Kurushima Yoshitaka, his third unit of cavalry archers under Miyoshi Higozaemon and the other unit of Yari Samurai under Ouchi Sodan. The rest of his foot troops he sheltered within the trees with his hatamoto just outside, but still protected. From this position, he awaited his enemy.

AND NOW......PART III

Far to the north, Shadowkill Watanabe and his army entered the hills of Aki cautiously. He knew that his enemy Magyar could be hidden just behind the next hill or stand of trees. He had not brought his men this far for it to end so quickly. He knew the skill of Khan's cavalry and had prepared accordingly. His hatamoto were hand-picked Samurai, each bearing a sharp tipped Yari. With him on the long march were many of his best troops.

The spear armed outriders of Chosokabe Hidemoto scouted the terrain ahead for any sign of the enemy as the army advanced. Shadowkill had also brought with him Yari armed samurai from his regular army. Three units strong, each under the command of his most capable retainers, Ikoma Tanezane and the Ukita, Yoshinaga and Takayoshi. Musket armed conscripts under the leadership of Takahashi Motonaga, Ichijo Hirochika, Takahashi Nobukane and Koteda Sakon rounded out the regular army from Kii. The rest of his regular troops had been left behind. His reasons for this were two-fold.

First, he knew that this was only the first of his final battles with Khan and wanted to ensure strong reserves in his homeland for the final struggle. Second, word of Shadowkill's vision had reached the monks in their mountain temples. In response to this, they emptied the temples to assist their Lord and Daimyo in his task. Six units strong, one from each of the shrines in the region under direct orders from the Nichiren Abbot to serve and obey. These troops formed the core of the army as they moved across the hills.

Shortly, scouts from the Chosokabe cavalry returned with news that the enemy had been uncovered. Watanabe was told of the strength of their position and devised a strategem to overcome the troops of Khan. He detached half of the monks to take position un-noticed within the woods on Khan's left flank and to wait for his signal. The rest of the troops he drew up on the small hill opposite Khan's position. The plan was a simple one, his numerical superiority in guns would draw out Khan, forcing him to attack in an attempt to prevent the destruction of his troops. With that attack underway the monks would sweep out of the woods and into Khan's flank while the remainder of his Yari troops would sweep in on Khan's mounted troops caught in the trap. The strength of such force would surely turn Khan's army and end the battle.

As Shadowkill's muskets opened fire, Khan's muskets and foot archers returned fire. Far to Khan's left, the warrior monks of Kii moved unnoticed towards the trees on his flank.

Part IV and the conclusion of this battle is forthcoming.

My intent was certainly not to tease the patrons of this forum, although from the responses posted here, the serialization seems to be fairly popular. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I have set aside some time though to finish the story.

Good storytelling Obake, having fun here.

I remember in Starcraft they had their official and unofficial tourneys and then they had battle reports for all battles in the last stages of the tourney, including screenshots and all.... it could be great if we could arrange for such things here... not that I have not tried to unite all tourneys under a common Grand Prix so far....
