I'm not happy to be whining on my first post, but I've never seen an online forum that after registration restricts posts from the main forum sections such as The Main Hall. I'm here to figure out Medieval Total War, but I can't post messages there? What is the point? How long does Junior Patron status last?

The types of restrictions you talk about in the New? thread concerning acceptable behavior are normally taken care by most forums within the realm of normal posts. If someone displays poor manners, you warn them, restrict them or boot them. Honestly, if your looking for info, its mostly a waste of time to be expected to sit around the Entrance hall and chit chat until the forum moderators figure out I'm a nice person. I am by the way. :)

I guess I'll just cool my shoes here. My question concerns development of trade. I'm looking for how to acquire the compass. I've downloaded several files from your files section. I see referrences to it, but don't see how it's acquired. Can anyone assist?

Thanks. And sorry for the complaining.

you can post in the other forums using this thread (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=18207). i kinda like the waiting period, it keeps the spammers down http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It's an event that happens in a certain year (1180-ish I think). You don't have to do anything to get it and you can't change the year it happens.

Well, welcome to the Org, huntn Just bring your complaints to the day http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

The organization of the org is as it is; it is designed to discourage spammer, flamers et cetera. We have pretty much figured everything there is to be about M:TW, the vast quantity of our files speaks for itself. Search, and thou shell find

As for the compass, you do not acquire it. Compass is a sort of an event, like he invention of gunpowder. Cannot frankly remember if it has any relation to trade… http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Place any of your questions in the Main Hall and you'll probably get an answer pretty soon.

Cheers,

I have not seen such a fast reponse to one of my posts and friendly too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-blush.gif Thanks, I appreciate it and appreciate getting the info too

I did read a thread on trade with ships. It appears that if you have a port, a goode to trade, a merchant or trading post, and have ships in each zone connecting your port to another factions port, you should have shipping trade, right?

How do you tell, whether the trade is flowing or not via your ships? Does a message pop up saying trade route established'?

Thanks

If you look in the income parchment, and then click on any provinces with a trading post or higher, a new parchment will appear saying how much local trade there is, what you are exporting to each province, and how much you are earning from it.
Also, if you press the v key, any open sea lanes will light up in green (I think, I don't use it much). If you have a port and any level of merchant in a province, then it will automatically be trading with any province that has a port, and is connected via a sea lane.

And welcome http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Welcome to The Org huntn http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

The ascension process is relatively mild and fast. Keep posting questions, a short bio, join an existing thread and soon you will see your posting rights expand.

This system is a little different, but after a while everyone starts to appreciate it - it is a major reason the site is as nice as it is.

I think the compass allows some ships that can go into deep water.

V works and so the parchments you mentioned shines light on the situation. Thanks so much http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

as a side note, you will only be able to export stuff into provinces that also have a port. Also, only goods that the target province does not have will be exported (i.e., you won't make any money exporting wool in wessex since wessex has wool (i think)).
Your trade routes work if and only if you have a continous chain of ships from a source to a destination and all of the sea regions of that chain are free of enemy ships. An enemy ship in any sea region disrupts trade in that region, and breaks your continuous chain. Of course you can have several paths from a source to a destination, you need at least one for the trade to work.
Also, you can not trade with enemy factions (i.e., factions you are at war with).
Another possibly interesting note: barques' maintenance increases by 20 florins per sea region distance from the originating port. Caravels are much much cheaper.
Therefore you should try to spread your barques-producing provinces all over the shores, not concentrate them all in, for instance, eastern mediterranean. It really sucks to have to pay 160-200 florins maintenance per barque, wouldn't you say ?

hope this also helps you a bit.

Hi huntn, and welcome to the .Org.

I see you've met our friendly, helpful patrons. This place (the Entrance Hall) is frequented by many such folks who remember being a newb and how disorienting it can be. Stick around, play well with others, and you'll be on your way to posting bliss in no time.

As you progress in your MTW campaign, once you get a ring of ships (circling the Med, for example), the florins just come rolling in.

This is where everybody can post, so in my book, this is the main forum. I'm sure the other forums are very nice, but as they are for a select group of people, they're not a truly public forum like this one.

(Personally I prefer the anarchistic nature of usenet over webforums. Not even registration necessary.)

Entrance Hall has several purposes.

To help the new users as quickly as possible.

To protect the Org from Trolls.

To help the new users as quickly as possible.

To give warning about Australian posters.

To help the new users as quickly as possible.

To recommend that you get a medical checkup before looking at Solys Sticky thread in the Frontroom.

To help the new users as quickly as possible.

To warn about the tavern and its slice of patrons.

To help the new users as quickly as possible.

To give warning about Australian posters.

To help the new users as quickly as possible.

Dunno how I slipped through then http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif. It's not as if I'm easy to miss.

One other point about the entrance hall, if a new patron has a question that can't be answered by the other people who hang around here, eg a technical question involving modding the game, the moderators are happy to move it.

We have a quota. And believe in at least one exception to every rule:

1 Accountant.

1 Troll.

You filled two roles so you are in.

Welsh Marches... is that in Wales or bordering Wales?

IRT the original post:

the problem i have with the logic of the junior patron system is that if non-junior patrons (ie: Promoted Members) break the rules enough times, then they get nerfed back to junior patron anyhow and/or banned

for this reason, the junior patron system does not make sense.

it is more logical to let everyone be a Member right away since they are gonna get nerfed anyhow for misbehaving even if they are a Member

Yeah i've never seen this in any other forums

Normally you stay junior for a couple of days unless you have been misbehaving.

A couple of days is enough time for the trolls and flamers to lose interest. And it is enough time for the newbies to be met, greeted and helped.

Navaros, 99% of the time when a patron gets in trouble it is because of an incident or two in the Tavern forum and usually revolves around politics, religion, etc. So when a Member gets nerfed (like that term) for bad behaviour, it is to Senior Patron which restricts them from posting in the Tavern. That is, we prevent them from posting in the forum that is causing them to get in trouble.

Also, until about 6 months ago, a Junior Patron could ONLY post in the Entrance Hall - period So the Junior Patron of today has much more posting freedom that those of the past.

Getting back to the trolls Pape mentioned, we had this forum flooded with outsiders at on time due to a debate in the Tavern on gun control. A group of pro-gun people got wind of the debate, registered with our boards and dove into the gun control debate, spamming and spewing our forums with their own political rhetoric on the issue. It got quite unpleasant. The Entrance Hall prevents those kind of people from infecting our main forums. They simply won't have the patience or the time to deal with the Junior Patron thing for a few days to a week just to post in the Tavern. This system has also stopped a handful of troublemakers from having full access to our forums. They have since drifted away to more fertile fields.

In the end, it is the patrons of this forum that benefit from the system. It is not a power trip thing for us or to make it an elite club. It is here to help the new patrons acclimate to the forums and make sure that those who are here will not ruin the enjoyment of these forums for everyone else.

That's a relief, I was worried thatr I would be banned for being an accountant. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The Welsh Marches are the Wales/England border region, I live a few miles inside Wales. After the Norman conquest of England it was a convenient place to send quarrelsome and ambitious nobles so they could work their agression out against the Welsh and each other without disturbing the peace in England.

Not sure about the Aussie thing... probably an inside joke.

But a 'troll' is, in board-speak (not just here, but any board), someone who makes threads and posts with the sole intent of starting fights and otherwise causing trouble.

So if I came in and started posting stupid crap like Hitler was awesome, which is sure to piss off lots of people, then I'd be a troll.

BTW, welcome. I'm relatively new here too.

Cheers

Aussies and Kiwis tend to post to each other what others would consider flames... being sarcastic and teasing are national traits.

I reside in Taiwan but I am a dual Australian / New Zealand citizen... so inside joke and I am making fun of myself and my fellow Aussies... and proving my point I guess http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
