What would happen if one of my allies attacts one of my enemies next to one of my provinces and I decide to join in?

You have a battle with the enemy and your allies help you out or the enemy might run off. If victory is secured then the province will go to the largest force involved out of you or your ally

it's determined by the largest force at the end of the battle.

if you have say 490 to your allie's 500, it's easy to get them killed to less than 300 by the enemy while say 200 to allie's 500, you prbably don't have many chances to get the province.

I suggest sitting back and just rain supporting fire with archers etc and don't get tangled in melee.

do as much as possible to let the ally do the work and you ge the province.

yeah, but if you really want the province, and it could be really valuable to you, you can stab your ally's back by attacking him during the battle, then it would be a triple three for all. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/medievalcheers.gif

And that can happen. I was the English and helped by allies the danes who were being attacked by the french. We routed them and as my brave soldiers were chasing the french routers, i saw white flags appear on my rearguard and those scumbag danes were attacking them Needless to say they died by english steel but it gave me quite a shock http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

If you want to stab your allies, hopefully have the enemy on the run and/or very favorable positions such as your archers in range of enemy high value units, melee units on flanks and rear as well as counter units right next to the allied units.

it's nice to slam your cav into the flanks of both armies and entirely roll them up.

I just sit back and let my allies and the enemy duke it out. When my allies flee, I'll just go finish off the enemy. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

There are two possible situations:
1) You attack an enemy and your ally decides to send support.
This scenario has been treated sufficiently above.

or

2) The enemy invades your allies territory, beats him and starts sieging the castle. You send a relief force.
In this case you will get a standard field battle. If have yet to see my ally get of his lazy bum and help me instead of staying high and dry in his castle, but then I haven't seen this situation often. After destroying the enemy the province will be returned to your ally and your army will go back to its original province. Beware that there is or was a bug when your army couldn't retreat, for example with amphibious invasions when the port was destroyed. It then gets ransomed by your ally
