Playing the English I once got 1000 fl./ year from 1087/88 to 1095/96 which gives a total of 9.000 fl. for beeing such a good catholic, he he
Can anyone top this? (Not including crusades)
Nope.
I've had 5 in a row as the French, including past an excomm warning when I pounded the Brits real hard.
How in the world did you get 9 in a row? What were you doing that gave that kind of handout?

Playing the XL-mod where the Scots are a faction I was actually pounding them when this happened. Have no explanation and didn´t do anything odd or different to deserve this. The stat for my king Will II wasn´t any different than any other game that´s why I posted this to maybee get an answer. I´ve had 5X1.000fl. as the most before but 9 that really stunned me.
This is impossible, i've never got 2 in a row and i've had 9 piety rulers a lot.
you have to be piss poor as well as zealous

never got more than 3 years in a row
Playing as the Spanish i always receive 3 or 4 papal handouts, sometimes even more. Mostly because i spend a lot of cash on bribes, so in the beginning of the game i am the poorest catholic faction really fast while pope still has all of his money. So basicly i bribe and the pope becomes poor...this sound a bit like exploiting the game though.
it is, sometimes doesn't really work that well anyhow.
funny how in late game you can get handouts for massed crusades but you are in fact very very rich

End of a campaign as the English - Expert. I have over a million florins and have rescued the Pope from excomed Sicilians 3-4 times and been allied for at least 20 years. The Pope gave me 1000 florins for at least 5 turns in a row. Not that I needed it, would have been great at the beginning of the game.

I actually dont think you have to be poor to get a hand out from the church...
I was playing as the english and I had taken over all french provinces without being excommunicated because they had been excom. earlier in the game. I wiped out the french and then built the tower combo with the churches to control the revolts in my new provinces. I got the message that I had the largest income or whatever it says and then the church gave me 3 years of donations...
so I dont know how they judge the handouts?

That really hasn't been the case for me either, at least as far as being poor goes. I play as the Spanish a lot, and I almost always get a bunch of Papal handouts in the first 10-20 years, even though I usually have a pretty good income going already. (Everyone who's played as the Spanish knows they start with pretty rich provinces, not to mention that most nearby lands that they're likely to conquer are wealthy as well.)
My faction leader's piety usually doesn't seem be to very relevant, either. Spain's kings are usually pretty devout guys; but so are England's and Italy's (generally speaking, of course--I know there's exceptions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif), and I usually don't get nearly as much cash from Rome if I'm playing as either of those two factions.
It seems that the degree of the Pope's generosity depends primarily on how zealous your people are. To use Spain as an example again, their provinces seem to start out with noticably higher zeal than most Catholic factions. Otherwise I can't really think of any other reason.
