something I found a little depressing

Playing as the English and forcing my way east from Aquitane and my other starting provinces in the Late Period, I was finally forced to stop attacking my fellow catholics once I reached the papacy (at this time it had Rome, Tuscany, the Papal States, and a few of the other Italian Provinces because they had a war). I stopped here and waited to be welcomed back into the church just so what was left of the germans and other catholic groups couldnt send any crusades against me
- although they usually suck before they reach any province of importance to me during this game the french fleet had knocked out my navy on the western shore of europe and now had an open way into Wessex and the rest of those island provinces which was hurting my progress because I would have to pull back troops to save my homelands -
I sat there a few turns until finally in about the 3rd turn of waiting I had 6 papacy assassins captured and killed and the Pope himself declaring war and attacking me I mean wow it makes me feel bad to think that the leader of the catholic church, The Pope himself, is out to get me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-stunned.gif

the pope _is_ a depressing SOB (in the game, ofc ;P).
i personally found out that it's quite random when you can get a faction you're at war with to agree to a ceasefire.
I haven't figured out a pattern for it (is there one ?), so if he's too powerful for you to wipe out, keep sending assassins after him. Maybe, just maybe, his successor won't be so bent on going at war, but this is just a thought.

Remember there is no such thing as a best friend in MTW.you just use alliances as cover for getting your armies up and such.

It'd just be nice if alliances were a little more concrete and really meant something, but now that I think of it that would slow down the game alot so you're right again

In my las English/High/Hard game, in about 1338, the papal domain includes all italian peninsula, Sicily (he personally wiped out the sicilians), Greece, and Europe til Lorraine and Provence to the West, Denmark to the North, Friesland (NW), and Poland to the East. He also holds Pomerany, Sardinia, Cyrenaica and Crete. Then you can talk about Counterreforms

I cant even remember the last time I was communicated The last 2 monarchs wiped out the French, Spanish (reduced to one provincem Genoa, surrounded by papal land), Danes and HRE (I destroyed their king in Switzerland, but they had only 2 provs left by then after awar against the pope).

I was considering playing them but I like how some countries have the unique unit roster and the Danes... well as far as I know they only have long boat and vikings which IMHO arent the most helpful if you wanna play in Late period

start the game with -ian switch and use ctrl+number keys to access various factions.

ctrl+shift+6 is horde. shift key gives you more than 10.

I have seen plenty of times AI factions get destroyed when the papacy gets resurrected. The best thing to do is exile the papacy preferbably in an island.

But the pope usually keeps the game balance quite well.

Wow. That's certainly an interesting game. I've never had something that extreme happen. The Pope never got beyond Tuscany and Sicily in my games. The wierdest things I've seen are Sicilians in Constantinople (and I think Aragon conquered Sicily and Naples in that same game), and (in a different game) Hungary in Friesland (they had a nice triangular empire from Friesland to the Adriatic and the Black Sea.

If you modded the game to make the papacy playable can you excommunicate people and allow crusades to happen? I heard if you get attacked the other faction gets excommunicated, but i dont know, can anyone confirm this?

The same rules for excommunication apply when you are playing as the Pope. Attacking the pope gets a faction excommunicated, ignoring his warning gets a faction excommunicated, refused a crusade passage... and so fort.
You do not get an excommunicate faction button, papal warnings are issued automatically and you cannot refuse crusades. But, as the Pope, you can attack any faction you like because the Papacy never recieves warnings. Strangely, you can get excommunicated by refusing a crusade passage.
