View Full Version : I need a challenge!
Well, it's got the point where I've played Shogun so much that I can win on expert without suffering a single defeat. I'm just wondering, what should I do now? I want a challenge from the AI still, the armies I face seem to mostly just be a joke. In my current game Imagawa have taken over most of the map that doesn't belong to me, but their armies are almost completely SA and YA They're such a joke on the battlefield.
Has anyone made any mods for STW? I know there are countless mods for MTW but I've never really heard anything on the STW front about mods. Seems it might be a way to add something to the game (although I admit I still enjoy playing it regardless of difficulty). The other obvious option is multiplayer, but, for the life of me, I can't get it working. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif

There're plenty of mods to STW:MI. I know somethat makes it harder too, just browse the database here at the org and you're bound to find some.
Another thing, did you ever consider going on-line? If not then try it, it's great fun. (Im sorry if the servers are not up, if they are then good, if not I heard someone wanted to set up his own, worth checking out).
I've tried many times to get online working, but I get the classic hanging at "logging on..." problem. I've tried everything that has been suggested but nothing works. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif
...I'm really very stupid to not have looked at this very site for STW mods. I'll go check 'em out
Okay, I've looked at the downloads page, but is there anywhere that explains what they do? The file names don't seem all that helpful.

Try some different campaigns. I think Nobunagas Ambition and some of Tosa and Barraoca are good, cant remember tho.
For online fun, search the forum or keep checking here maybe someone can tell you :)

House rules/player handicaps work for me.

what i do i try to play historically correct - lets say if i play Oda then i mostly use guns and yari/ashugaru. if i play Takeda then i use only cavalry.
its a great fun and make me use crazy tactics to win.
but anyway i too would like to know if there is some mod for STW to tweak AI for some more challenge...
I've realised there are a fair few battles in the Historical section I haven't finished yet, so I'm trying to finish them all on Expert. Some of them are tough nuts to crack (not to mention one that CTDs every time I play it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif ). I think it's because I'm used to choosing my own army in the SP campaigne and so with these I have to try and use some odd combinations. (I hate arquebuses and ashigaru, so I'm learning to use them too).
All in all I think the cure for my boredom is that I need to try out new playing styles and units. I'm far too stuck in my ways. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
(I'm still working on my online playing problem. I want to provide some fresh blood for everyone to beat. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif )
HicRic,
I've been creating some other single player Shogun campaigns (as I posted to the Shogun mods thread in this forum), and I've just uploaded the latest version, Shogun_Amagi. It's not on the main files database yet, but can be downloaded from the upload database.
The Shogun mods post explains the concept of the campaigns. I've included three campaigns in the new version
- Mongol 1274 from the 1.4 version, basically a harder defence of Japan for the Hojo
- Sengoku 1545, with the clans starting at a low level with few provinces
- Sengoku 1570, with the clans starting at an advanced level and with large territories
These should be an improvement on the other versions and on the original campaigns. Any contributions welcome.
Those mods sounds very interesting, amagi I think I'm going to go off now and download them, I'll let you know what I think of them. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Command battles with your other hand.
that's a bit harsh, cebei http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif
That's a nice idea, Cebei, but I'm ambidextrous so I can manage perfectly well with either. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
amagi I've starting playing your mod (the 1545 one). Very interesting. The AI seems to be making more troops (and better ones) and not doing silly attacks so often. A nice improvement. However, the unit sizes are tiny Why did you cut most of them in half? It's kind of odd having only 30 men in most units (except 40 in YS and 60 in YA). I'd be interested in your reasoning for doing this. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif However, the battles are still fun, and the game generally harder due to the increased AI tendancy to build up troops and good buildings, and not waste armies in needless attacks. A very nice job http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
Hmm...I've just had a thought. I should probably try and play battles without pausing at all. I do tend to punch the 'p' key a few times each battle, so perhaps I should try and break the habit.

yeah, definately play without pausing
It's not like a japanese daimyo had the option to pause, so he could co-ordinate the movements of his army. But you should REALLY try to get online, I stress this again, it certainly gives you a challenge.
